    Shot On Video Appreciation Thread

I decided it was time to dedicate an entire thread to the wonders of Shot On Video (SOV) movies. Some people call them cheap, others call them shitty, there are even some who call them Shot On Shiteo...No matter what they're called though, they are still the same great movies.

While the number of SOV titles have grown because of how cheap a mini-DV camera is and that even mainstream titles are being shot on video (28 Days Later, anyone?). This thread is more dedicated to the movies that were shot on VHS, S-VHS, Hi-8, etc. formats.

Get the ball rolling with some of the titles that are available on DVD at the moment, like...

    Video Violence - (1987)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094262/

Video Violence finds a normal, unsuspecting couple - Steve and Rachel - completely immersed in a town of blood-drunk crazies. Led by sickos Howard and Eli, these backwater psychopaths produce and watch their own snuff movies in which the victims are outsiders or citizens trying to leave the close-knit community of killers. One day an unmarked tape shows up in the return bin of Steve's just-opened video store, and it's the town postmaster being savagely mutilated. "Can it be real, or just a gag?" wonders Steve. He'll soon discover the horrifying answer…

With the DVD of Video Violence, you get it's masterful sequel.

    Video Violence 2 - (1988)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237894/

In Video Violence 2, Howard and Eli have graduated from gruesome basement antics to pirating a cable TV channel for the purpose of furthering their brand of homegrown depravity, madness and murder. With the help of 'do-it-yourself' violence videos sent in by adoring fans and a beautiful guest actress unaware of the pain in store for her, the sadistic hosts guarantee the "Bloodiest Show on Earth!"

    Woodchipper Massacre - (1989)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096462/

It’s The Brady Kids meets the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in this heartwarming, stomach-churning tale of a not so typical American family that unexpectedly finds itself caught up in a web of death, deceit and dismemberment. And what better way for this trio of demented siblings to discard of fresh human remains than turn it into garden variety mulch…by way of the biggest woodchipper ever to chop’n’grind a grown man into ground meat. In this family, blood really is thicker than water.

    Cannibal Campout - (1988)
    http://i31.tinypic.com/208tged.jpg

Cannibal Campout is the tender and terrifying tale of a band of man-eating maniacs. Desperate to survive, the deranged orphans honor a deathbed promise to dearly departed mother never to eat junk food again. Instead, they work up frenzied appetites that will only be satisfied by the taste of young flesh. When Amy and her college friends arrive for a fun-filled weekend of camping in the desolate wilderness, they quickly learn the horrors of being on the wrong end of the food chain. Only brutal murder, torture and mutilation await as one by one they are stalked and terrorized by this brood of bloodthirsty mountain dwellers who will stop at nothing to appease their hunger for sliced, diced and barbecued camper.

    Boardinghouse - (1982)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083670/

A man with telekinetic power inherits a big house with a horrible past. He opens the house up as a boarding house and very quickly becomes inhabited by a group of gorgeous women. Soon the long sleeping evil supernatural power inhabiting the house starts killing off the tenants one by one.

I think there is a big difference between the movies you mentioned and 28 Days Later... even though it was filmed on video, it was edited with a lot of effects and filters to give it a "film" feel. those other ones where just shot on video camera, and edited linearly.

Comment wasn't really intended to be up for a debate session, but alright.

Yeah, there is a difference since the ones I have listed were shot on a different format than 28 Days Later. And regardless of how it was edited, 28 Days Later was still shot on video, digital video, but video none the less.

The whole point of the comment was that times have changed, and shooting a movie on a non-film format has become more acceptable because of the improvement in technology. That has also allowed it to make it easier and cheaper for people to make a movie, that have just as good of quality as movies that are shot on film. Compared to the movies that were shot on a home video format, that obviously have an inferior quality to them.

Well that was what I was inferring... films that are made on video now... go through the edits, and filters to look like film. Back in the day they didn't do that. Anyway, usually its a safe bet that if they where not able to get the money for film, then they probally weren't able to get it for effects or good actors. there are exceptions, but thats what they are, exceptions to the rule.

I'm well aware of this, and I'm sure anybody with common sense understands this too.

SOV titles are the quintessential of low budget filmmaking. They are the result of people with no budgets taking advantage of a source that enabled them to make a movie where they normally could not. Also that the video format was consider to be the direction that technology was going in so there were a number of movies with larger budgets who shot on the video format as well.

Like I said, this thread wasn't intended to analyze why SOV titles were made, as we all know why. It also isn't about modern SOV titles because of how common and acceptable it is becoming to use that format. The thread is about the movies that were SOV "back in the day". That's it.

    Dreamaniac - (1986)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124442/

A heavy-metal musician makes a deal with a satanic succubus to make him successful with women, in return for the succubus being able to feed on the girls.

    - Reviewed this one not to long ago on Film Bizarro (Dreamaniac Review) and it was really a boring movie. Not even an cheesy-entertaining movie, just...boring. Definitely one that needs to be left for the SOV aficionados.

    Sledgehammer - (1983)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244800/

A young boy murders his mother and her lover with a hammer. Ten years later, a wave of teenage murders plagues the same area.

    - A movie that has gained infamy because of how crappy the artwork is, and the abuse of the slow motion function in the movie. Also did a review for this one (Sledgehammer Review), and this one fared a bit better than Dreamaniac. Mostly because it was so bad it was amusing, and those slow motion scenes...Amazing. Definitely not a favorite of mine, not something I've had a desire to go in for repeated viewings, but it is something that needs to be seen to believe.

Also, the movie comes with a great built in drinking game of Spot the Boom Mic.

    Spine - (1986)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165960/

It's 1986, a maniac is on the loose, bounding and killing any woman who is foolish enough to be a nurse in the Los Angeles area. The police have no leads, other than the fact that the killer specifically targets the spine of his victims.

    - Another one I reviewed (Spine Review) and one that I liked the best out of these three movies, even though it's not too good either. It wouldn't have been so bad had it not been for the ending that really just took the piss out of the whole thing. Still, probably one of the more well made SOV titles I've seen.

WHOA! I can't believe I didn't notice this thread until now. Being a huge fan of trash and z-grade horror cinema, I absolutely LOVE SOV horror flicks from the 80's! I have all of these films mentioned on various formats...VHS, DVD, DVD-R.

I don't think I saw Death Row Diner or Houseboat Massacre on this list though; time to update it! I know there's plenty more out there as well...hmm...Blood Lake comes to mind.

FYI, if you guys haven't seen the wonder that is Boardinghouse, DO SO IMMEDIATELY! It's completely off the wall cheeze; you'll laugh your ass off!

Again, it's crazy that you got the rights to that movie Slayer! Can't wait for an "official" DVD of that film...my DVD-R is getting pretty worn out!

I've wanted to watch Houseboat Massacre for awhile now, but I keep putting it off. There's still plenty of SOV movies that haven't been posted about, mostly because I'm lazy.

Attack Of The Beast Creatures was shot on film but might as well be a SOV flick (it certainly has the quality charms of one). See it, love it, and cherish this film! I guess you can say that they are "dolls" in the film.
