In most of the french horror movies, women are shown as true fighters, victims of torture....even as the ulltimite warrors and survivors. Do people just sympathize more with women? So, if you want people on edge make the victim a woman and if you want to show equality, why not beat them equal as men. This may be the reason the makers of Inside went a step further and tortured a heavily pregnant woman.

What are your thoughts?

i think people do sympathize with women more in general..in most horror movies the surviving "victims" are always women....scream texas chainsaw massacre halloween to name a few.... my personal opinion the makers of inside(a movie i hated) tortured the pregnant female for shock value and its usually never done

Great thread woodenheart and interesting question. I think they choose women because they're easier to victimize, we see it everyday in real life, the weaker of the species. And for that I do sympathize. I really enjoy seeing a kick arse female lead in films come back from a great hardship to get even, shows that women can be strong too. Sometimes even more so than the men.

Women are often the survivors and fighters in horror. Not only French horror. Of course, I personally haven't seen the majority of French horror movies though. Plenty, but not most. Maybe it happens even more in those.

I also agree with him that it felt like they went with the pregnancy in Inside because it would shock, because lets face it, the movie is only made for blood/gore and shock. Very thin plot and there is no other reason to bring in THAT many people into the story unless it was to kill them in gruesome ways, which it did. So the preggo plot was just there so that it would all be more disturbing.

Nice thread. there's quite a few movies i've seen where there were only male survivors (not gonna say which ones, for spoiler reasons). in anycase i'm more a fan of zero happy endings and a complete gorefest finale, but obviously from my sig pic, I also love watching where the chick rules the movie, dominates, kicks plenty of ass/goes on a killing spree. too bad there's not too many films like that in existence..

It's pretty common to have a woman survivor, especially in movies where the gal is the victim and then seeks out revenge on those who wronged her.
Frankly it doesn't really matter to me what gender the survivors are or the heroes or the villains. It doesn;t faze me to see a female hero and i've never thought to myself, "Damn, that character can kick ass - you know, for a chick..." because i myself have known some down and dirty tough chicks so it's really nothing new.
