Are you serious? Of course they are "charactor/actor" based films. Who doesn't remember Bela Lugosi as Dracula? Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster? Many, many people still believe that those two actors are the only ones who can/could play as those characters. But that didn't stop those characters from being redone dozens and dozens of times. Everyone still remembers those movies, those characters, and those actors fondly. Christopher Lee is famous for his portrayl of Dracula, and none of his movies "destroyed" Lugosi's legacy.
The only ones who don't acknowledge those actors and those movies are the younger generations who can't watch movies that are that old. Regardless though, their performances have become embedded into pop-culture and have shaped the way others have adapted and view those characters. Just like Freddy, Jason, and Michael are. Those three have become embedded so far into pop-culture that it doesn't matter what actor is portraying the character, it doesn't matter what year a movie about them is being made. Everyone is very familiar with their look's, gimmick's, music that they instantly recognize them without the aid of the 'original' actors.
