Final Destination 4 - Review Thread
I went to the advanced midnight screening, stood in line among bickering fans in a debate between Halloween 2 vs. FD4, and paid for my $12 ticket. Who's going to win? Well I can't tell you at this moment, but FD4 may, and I stress the word "may" have a chance...
This is a Final Destination movie so we already know what happens... horrible accident... main character has vision... he or she saves a few only for them to die later.
Sadly that's exactly where the story begins and ends. This film being by the makers of Final Destination 2, I expected more connection to the first three films as they seemed to do a good job connecting Final Destination 2 with Final Destination 1. This did not happen. Instead we are reduced to "We were up last night Googling and now know everything about death and how to stop it".
The plot has become all too familiar and no new ground is covered or added to the mythology. The opening sequence is mediocre at best compared to the previous films. While the 3D may make it shocking at first you then realize, how many people can actually relate to watching a Nascar race? Planes, Freeways, and Roller Coasters are much more a part of peoples everyday life.
Don't worry there are still some amusing moments and the 3D does add a new level of excitement, but not by much. You'll find yourself ducking and dodging blood splatters and flying objects. My only complaint is that it wasn't used often enough.
The director assumes his audience is only there for one thing which makes the movie all too short and doesn't build any suspense. The main characters premonitions are in CGI and kind of take you out of the "real life" setting, not to mention the fact that he has too many of them.
Certain scenes are creative, like the brutal escalator sequence. The hair salon is your typical "50 million things topple over each other, bump into something, and fall out of place only for something completely random and unrelated to kill you" moment in the film.
Car Wash's become a playing ground for death, only to taunt it's victim by going in and out of drive/reverse. There's a suspenseful movie theatre scene and "vision within a vision within a vision" scenario (make sense?) that would even make Wes Craven proud, yet somehow our lead still can't manage to save his friends in time.
The rest of the characters are shallow and their deaths forgettable. There's the weird use of racial slurs that's awkwardly timed, and a scene with a noose that might instantly remind people of lynching.
Overall I give the film a 6/10 mostly due to the 3D, but hopefully this is THE Final Destination in the series. Sadly there's no appearance by that creepy Tony Todd.
FD - 8/10
FD2 - 7/10
FD3 - 6/10
