Mad Max 4 now official

THR reports that a fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise has officially been greenlit and will reportedly go into production in Sydney and outback New South Wales sometime in 2010.

Original writer/director George Miller returns and will also serve as producer on the pic. Titled Fury Road, the project is supposedly budgeted at around $100-million

There was talks earlier in the year from George Miller that the fourth installment may end up being a 3D animated feature, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

No word yet on what the premise may be and it's unlikely Mel Gibson would return as Max. Currently Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Sam Worthington are names rumored to be possibly have potential roles in the film.

Me too. I love the series, even though the first wasn't all that great and rather dark, while the third was a little goofy at times. I still enjoyed all three. I'd watch a fourth, even if Mel wasn't in it, but it would nice to see him have some sort of cameo appearance at least.

Why not? Everything else is either getting remade or a sequel-of. We're seeing a lot of revisits to old franchises like Rocky and Predator for instance as well.

The storyline for Mad Max is limitless...who knows what his next encounters will be. With the right imagination behind the writing, the fourth installment could be wild.

Without Mel, this won't work. Just another post-apocolyptic road movie. Still though, I'd see it.

First one is good, but it's kind of dull in the middle. Road Warrior is great. Thunderdome is awesome when they're in Barter Town, but then it turns into a kiddie movie and falls apart.

If they can keep it exciting with balls out car chases and violence I'd watch.

How can you make a Mad Max movie if Max isn't in it. Unless it's a remake, i suppose.

This has been in development hell for as long I can remember. Still Im glad Miller is still heading it up rather then getting some one like Michael Bay/Rob Zombie to do a remake. I wouldnt be against remaking the first film because it suffered from some low production values.

But they cant touch Road Warrior, that film is just classic and still holds up really well today. If they remade it, Id be all CG and fake looking. That has one of the best chases in movie history.

Really Id wish they could get Gibson one more time for a final chapter from the wander in the desert. It would be a great finale to the series and give it some much needed closure. But Gibson isnt in physical shape for this and with his recent antics, he might be box office poison for what is already a hard sell. Then again Im not sure where else to take the character or if Miller has anything left to say. Beyond Thunderdome was very uneven and everything after the Thunderdome fight, just felt like a rehash of Road Warrior except on a train and with more kids and umm pigs.

Oh and wasnt there suppose to be a Mad Max anime or something in the works? Seems like that would be a great way to continue the character in some form at least.
