The Problem With Horror Today

You're just not getting the "Imagine" part.

I am, but it's like imagining how many colors are out there that we've never seen. Chances are they'll never see the light of day and we'll never get a clue as to what they look like. I just don't see any point as to imagining how many movies that all have equal chances of sucking are just waiting for a green light.

I was listening to a recent John Landis interview and he made a point that I've never considered before. The problem with movies (commonly horror movies) these days are not the mass amount remakes because if they're done correctly - everyone's happy.

The problem is Studio bosses not taking risks. They play it too safe. They'll go with a remake because the name and the brand is already in the viewers mind. Why try to make a new horror icon and spend millions on it to bring it to the screen when people already know who Freddy and Jason are. The people with original ideas just are not getting the go ahead and the money.

It makes sense these bosses have to make money but it's sad really.

IMO the biggest problem is the special effects. Even the most overdone type of movie can be atleast a fun ride if its done with the right effects. I watched From Beyond yesterday. Storyline was there were a lot of wtf moments, but the movie was still awesome cuz the majority of the special effects were done so well. The main bad guy looked amazing AND real.

Now I'm not a remake hater, because some of them turn out good. But if From Beyond was remade these days they'd CG everything and it'd look like crap. Its pretty bad that a movie that came out 14 years ago for the most part has better special effects than a remake of it that would come out today.

I disagree, I think there's lots of talent out there but hollywood doesnt want talent, they want what is guaranteed to sell the most tickets and dvds. The only thing they KNOW is that certain movies sold well in the past, hence if they bring those out again there's a good chance we will make money.

Most studios aren't willing to risk their cash.

Lack of ideas, and horror doesn't have a huge fan basis, so lack of interest as well
