Old School FX vs CGI

I love old school effects, and I have more respect for them, but I don't mind CGI at all if its done well. Old school FX, you get to play with blood , limbs AND GUTS!! totally awesome! With CGI, you dont get that same gore feeling as what you see in the old films were they used make-up and costumes. CGI is just like any other tool. It's all in the way it's used. CGI has advanced, I think and in the right places can enhance a movie esp if old school FX is not optional. For the most part, what made old school FX better was it looked real, felt real and you could sense that it could be you in that situation. CGI is too obvious someimes and when it's used to cover the majority of flaws in a movie, it lends nothing new. My problem is that because CGI is so much easier to use, the old school methods have been withdrawn out completely and becoming less and less dominant. I want a gore fest with the original effects. I like the fact it can take a whole day to do an old school FX gore scene. The love and care the artists must put into it :heart:. Sometimes they can pull it off with a smooth merry of the two like Jurassic Park, but most of the time a movie like J Carpenter's The Thing, is going to do more for me.

The Australian Spierig Bros, who made the zombie flick Undead, created a low-budget zombie film that has done well internationally and looks way more expensive than it was. It's full of CGI -- CGI that they created themselves on their home computer.

Yup mike has it right, F cgi.

Cgi can be good but only if the budget of the film is relatively high, and most horror films don't command those kind of budgets. The best use of Cgi in a modern horror movie was in Aja's Hills remake. They used cgi to touch up on the practical effects and used it sparingly.

I think cgi will only get better, but as of now I prefer it as a compliment, or enhancement to standard effects work.

Not much of a choice here though as 99.9% of everyone here prefers Practical effects.

?...that means what? I've been on the board over 1 and half years, I know most are for the old way for their FX viewing. Just wanted to put a discussion we can all post on.


I'm concerned though saw the clip for Survival of the Dead, have to admit saw some CGI that kinda made me say..wtf...c'mon Mr Romero sir, tell me it ain't so...but as always I will give the GODfather of zombie films the chance he deserves :bow:

Obviously CGI is good for some films, like disaster flicks or something. But when it comes to Monsters, Dolls/Puppets, creatures, porn, F it :thumbsdown:

It's just redundant, I mean in almost every thread about new horror films people bitch and groan about Cgi. To say it's constant would be an understatement. I personally have heard more than enough about everyone's hate of cgi. Almost nobody favors it (nobody on this board), but it happens to be more convenient for filmmakers to use, so we're stuck with it.

Romero used alot of shitty cgi in 'Diary' and also had too much of it in 'Land'. Not completely sure why his latest trip into cgi mediocrity is a revelation to you.

Haha..whatever. I didn't care for Diary and Land was awesome. If anything I enjoyed making the thread. Researching and reading the thoughts of FX professionals and horror fans was fun. I was kinda hoping Romero would go back to the days of NOTLD and Day of. If he doesn't ever..oh well. He still is the greatest film maker ever...of coarse imho.


I like CGI but rather do it up old school. I give everything a chance. strtfghtr doesn't hate it but prefers it the old fashioned way like me.

He'll be able to make plenty more "Season of the Witch" caliber films though
