    The Ref (1994)

Denis Leary plays an unfortunate cat burglar, who is abandonded by his partner in the middle of a heist and is forced to take an irritating Connecticut couple (Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis) hostage. He soon finds that he got more than he bargained for when the couple's blackmailing son and despicable in-laws step into the picture. Before long they're driving him nuts with their petty bickering and family problems. The only way for him to survive is to be their referee and resolve their differences before he can be nabbed by the police.

I'm sure most people here have seen this movie by now. I've never really been into seasonal comedy flicks, but this is one of my personal favorites and one that I have to watch on Christmas (at least once) every year. Not only is it one of my favorite Christmas themed movies but also one of my favorite comedies in general. If anything, just because of Denis Leary and the fact that his comedy style is pretty predominate in the movie. (I'm guessing because his friend directed and wrote the movie, so I'm sure the character had always been intended for Leary.) But can't sell Kevin Spacey short either, as he has some great exchanges with his wife (Judy Davis) and Leary.

All in all though movie is hilarious with a lot of great lines and is pretty far from the standard-typical Christmas comedy flick, which is probably why I like it so much.

    Any other fans?

Went to see this in the theater. That was a touch creepy. All around the theater were couples, sitting together, scattered about nicely from each other. And me, alone.

Movie was great, though. Glad I saw it on the big screen.

    :mhehe:

Not sure why exactly but this is one of those movies that I would have liked to have actually seen at the theaters.

Ah, gee, you gotta wonder if Leary was so great in this, then Bill Hicks probably would have been a helluva lot better.

Probably not since Bill Hicks ripped of Leary who ripped off Hicks. So he could have done it better after Leary had done it, but only after Bill had.

Figured someone was going to bring up Hicks, and I should have known it would have been murdur.

Like, so many people out there were trying to track this down. And it just...got delivered on a tweet. What the hell.

Hicks stole from Leary, but he added humor and told the jokes before Leary did. :straightface2:

Hicks was in the stand up circuit well before Leary not to mention died in 1994 around the time Leary really began to take off. How in the hell was Hicks ripping off Leary? From his old MTV Remote Control days?

It's a joke in reference to a comment that Hick's made about how he stole Leary's act and that he did it before him.

Ahh ok that boat which I wasn't on. Well to get back on topic The Ref is really funny and Kevin Spacey steals plenty of scenes in that flick.
