Robocop on Ice
Aronofsky and MGM wrestle over remake.
by Scott Collura
January 7, 2010 - It was always too good to be true, and now it seems as though it never will come true. We're talking about Darren Aronofsky's RoboCop remake, the progress of which has reportedly been, well, arrested.
Moviehole has the report. The site spoke with the peeps at fan site RoboCop Archive, who had the following to say:
"I've spoken with Phoenix Pictures [and] asked them about the status of RoboCop," this Robo-enthusiast says. "They told me that the project is on hold. The problem is that Mary Parent, chairperson of MGM, wants a 3D movie for the new RoboCop. But, as you know, Darren Aronofsky is a real artist and he's not interested in gimmicks like 3D, CGI, filming digital; he wants to do everything as real [organic] as possible just like The Fountain."
Well, one could debate that CGI, or at least "filming digital," can be pretty organic too in their way, but the point is Aronofsky isn't going to get pushed around just because some suit wants to jump on the 3D bandwagon. And this film's chances of actually getting made have sounded iffy ever since it was first announced anyway.
Besides, MGM has other issues to deal with at the moment. Like avoiding the scrapheap that RoboCop himself wound up on during the climax of the first film.
