I couldn't get into the first Metro. Maybe I should go back to it eventually, but I found it kind of generic.

I'd recommend going back to it sometime. It possibly you just weren't in the right mood for that type of game, because I always found the Metro games fairly unique, mostly because of the whole setting where you have to traverse and live underground. Then there's the whole mask aspect that is required when you go above ground and the neat and sometimes challenging creatures you face. The game can get pretty damn creepy at times too. Yeah, I think you definitely need to check it again and it only gets better with the sequels.

TBH it wasn't the easiest game for me to get into. I actually stopped playing early on and picked the series back up when Metro Last Light came out and loved it enough that I went back after finishing it and tried 2033 again and loved it as well.

It can be pretty challenging at times, but well worth it. I love the weapon upgrades and surface roaming trying to get to various save points with a cracked gas mask and low on filter cartridges. The mutant werewolf creatures are a B when they attack in numbers, and the flying gargoyle/demon creatures can swoop down out of nowhere. It's totally worth it if you can stick with it early on because it'll deliver the goods.
