Also known simply as Woochi, this is a surprisingly fun action/fantasy from South Korea that starts off in the 1500s, and revolves around wizards who are used by the people to battle "goblins" that are after a mystical pipe that was once used to suppress them in a dark otherworldly prison. The pipe is broken is half with the pieces given to two of the most powerful wizards. The story follows a young mischievous wizard, whose master held one half of the pipe. The master is killed and just before the pipe could be stolen, the young wizard retrieves it before being sealed off in a magical scroll, never to be released for 500 years. Present day South Korea, the goblins are back and disguised in human form and are naturally after the other half of the pipe, knowing that the man who was sealed off will soon be free. :luris:
I really liked the flick -- it actually doesn't shift to present day until 40-or-so minutes in, but when it hits present day it becomes really fun and entertaining, especially seeing how these people adapt to their new surroundings. The "goblins" in the movie aren't what you'd expect them to be, as they seem to be based on more Asian folklore and have the guise of regular animals in more humanoid form, I.E. a rabbit or a rat with human-like legs and arms with armor. Naturally the pic requires a lot of CGI and luckily it's actually pretty decent looking. There are some scenes that could've been fine-tuned, but the effects for the most part weren't bad.
As standard with K-cinema, there's a lot of comedy throughout, which fits very well with the light-hearted, fantasy-tone of the flick. There were quite a few funny scenes, especially involving the young wizard's side-kick -- a dog turned human or in human form anyway. Expect some decent fights with a dash of of martial arts and weezard action. If you're open to a fun action fantasy, with a mix of past and present ideas then give this a check.
