I grew up with this film and is pretty dear to me, have seen it countless times especially when I was younger. If people like it it is cool, if not each to their own.

Haters only hate because Coach was the star of the movie. The same haters hate Teenwolf because Family Ties was the star. Let me guess, next you're gonna say Zapped! sucked just because Charles in Charge was the star? Gimme a Break!

Poltergeist was the film that frightened me the most as a kid, I would literally shake watching it, I did however live in a house that I believe was haunted so this may have some bearing on why it was so scary for me. Bottom line is its Marmite you love or hate it, I hated it because of the way it made me feel, I now love it because I miss the fact that no movie can scare me like that one did. Overall I'd give it a 7/10 purely on the fact it hasn't aged well...

i love the movie it scared the crap out of me as a kid and to me if you over analyse it takes the fun out of it. i mean in the end it did its job , it scared me. didn't hurt that i like ghost movies. To me its rare if a movie is 100 percent good , as far as the score the writing etc. Just sit back and if you are having fun with it go with it. I hate when i am watching a movie and all i hear is " all this is bs look he didnt even what ever" ya know . If i a movie is bad its bad and you move on . But if some one likes it and are watching it with you , wait till the end to discus it. i consider my self pretty picky when it comes to movies but , there are a lot of movies that i will watch that i know suck. Most of the time its because some one with me wants to watch them , or i saw them as a kid and they bring back memories. i guess getting back on subject to me the movie was good , the only problem i had with it , as a kid, was the fact that every one saw the house disappear and nothing happens. I would have thought that the news would have come and made a big deal and the church would get involved or something lol but again its just a movie and it cant get everything perfect or address every flaw in such a short time.

I don't particularly hate the movie, but I'm no drooling fan-boy over it either... The movie is okay, I suppose, but I'm really just not much of a ghost movie fan in general. There are a few ghost movies out there that I'm okay with, but you'll never see me dashing out to the theatre to see one.

Good way to put it. The movie concept wasn't entirely new or anything, but it had the luxury of coming out at the right moment in time - and combined with cool FX, and a capable cast - movie becomes instant cult status.

'Poltergiest' is one of the greatest ghost stories ever filmed and it's one of the movies I credit for getting me into the horror genre.

I understand where you're coming from. I hadn't watched Poltergeist in 15+ years. When I found a copy at my local used game/DVD shop I scooped it up remembering it as a classic. Something about it left a bad taste in my mouth after I got done watching it. I think I can verbalize it now.

First, the attitude of the parents, particularly the mother. Idk about you guys but if I came home and find my house was haunted, I'm staying in the Holiday Inn!!!! The mother seems absolutely delighted, but what I found most ridiculous was the way she acted after Carol Ann was abducted. She doesn't seem concerned at all. Casually sipping her coffee and smiling when she asks for the paranormal researchers to not play the video on the Tonight Show.

Second, the music. Jerry Goldsmith is a brilliant composer, but his score for Poltergeist just felt like too much. Has any horror movie ever had such an orchestral score? I'm sure there is one but I can't think of it.

Third, it just seemed to be aimed at too general an audience. I'm not saying it needed to be catered to gorehounds or horror connoiseurs (sp?), but just not to kiddies.

I loved this movie as a kid. I haven't seen it in many years so maybe I wouldn't enjoy it as much now.My sister and I would rent it every couple months. So it's one of those movies that I grew up with and will always love.
