I say that with tongue in cheek. I tend to respect a lot of music even if I don't like it, but my problems are twofold:
I bore easily.
I love a good concept album/rock opera deal.
So I'm looking for some new music. Anything new. To get started, here's what I like.
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Hit & Run Holiday sits atop them all. It's upbeat, switches genre with ease, and even tells a story about a girl named Krystal Starlust if you're listening close enough. Psychedelic surf jazz industrial rock disco. And it works. I want the last song on this album played at my funeral, even.
Devin Townsend Presents: Ziltoid: The Omniscient. All of it is metal, but it jumps through so many subgenres with so much ease that it's never stuck in one sound. Plus the story about a space alien who wants the perfect cup of coffee is absolutely what I like to hear. To a lesser degree, Cooked on Phonics is also still extremely awesome.
Tell me a fun story.
Even barring that, the last two Chemlab albums (East Side Militia and Oxidizer) have a wonderful cyberpunk feel, with each song telling tales.
I have been accused of enjoying my music "very aggro." That's not 100% true. But it helps to be exciting.
What I don't want:
Politics. Even if I agree with them - which I probably won't. That's just not fun.
Dimmu Borgir. It's all one sound, and I laughed at In Sorte Diaboli almost all the way through.
Too much whining. It's not deep that you can feel sad about everything. Getting off your ass and doing something is indescribably more profound. Go enjoy your life. Go make your life and your world a great place to be. Or STFU. Either works for me.
I'll answer more questions or take any albums / songs into consideration.
