Here's a new hit film from South Korea that stars Kang-ho Song from notable flicks like Thirst, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Memories of Murder. A box office hit in its home country, and with proper reason, as it's a pretty good and highly entertaining movie.
When North Korean secret agent Ji-won (Dong-won Kang) crosses the 38th Parallel on a mission, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) led by Han-gyu (Kang-ho Song ) intervenes, and a shooting rampage ensues in the heart of Seoul. For the incident, Han-gyu is fired and Ji-won is deserted by his agency. Six years later, the two meet by chance and start a business partnership in order to steal information from the other.
Movie starts off pretty strong and doesn't hold back on the violence and loss of innocent lives, especially involving a North Korean hitman named "Shadow". Though, much like Korean cinema, it also has its fair share of comedy, most of which works and keeps the pacing fresh and the character development between the former NIS agent and Spy growing strong.
The flick has action, drama, emotion, and comedy, with a steady pace, strong story and great character development. Worth a check for fans of Kang-ho Song or if you're just looking for a generally good movie to watch.
7/10 (but a high 7)
