High Tension or Martyrs

If it comes down to brutality and suspense, High Tension. Aja was masterful in combining the ultra violence with the high pitched sounds. However, the twist ruined it for me. I thought it would have been better if they'd stuck with the killer angle.
Martyrs, was an interesting flick. I really dug the premise, and it had some decent violence, but there was a lot of time dedicated to the relationship between the girls, which made the movie lag a bit for me.
In the end, they're dead even for me, but as far as French horror goes, Inside and Frontier(s) above these two, with Baby Blood in first all the way.

As for the two films in the OP, High Tension is one I can just sit and watch because it's just trying to entertain me. Martyr's, having seen once, is something I know i'd have to be in the mood for because it's trying to go a little deeper... ahem, yeah than your average Hostel/Saw film. So I guess in that sense, High Tension is more watchable, though both are good films in their own rights

For me both are merely OK, with a more watchable factor given to High Tension. The twist in High Tension was so forced it didn't make much sense and ruined the overall film.

I couldn't agree more. I enjoyed both, just depends what you're in the mood for. I guess for rewatchability it would be High Tension over Martyrs.

I tend to be more of a Martyrs fan. High Tension seemed like just an average slasher on crack, and the twist just made me facepalm.
I also enjoy Frontier(s), it's like High Tension on crack or something. Inside is my favorite from the New Wave of French Horror; that's gotta be one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

I love both. But, if I had to choose I'd go for 'Martyrs'. I thought 'Frontiers' was pretty meh.

Whilst I do enjoy both, I prefer Martyrs. Haute Tension has slightly less re-watch value for me.

Has anyone seen the Belgian film Calvaire? Whilst not as good as either Haute Tension or Martyrs in my opinion, it certainly exhibits shades of both.

It was a strange movie. I liked it, but wasn't expecting some of the things that happened in that film. I went into it blind, and quite glad I did.

High Tension was good, but Martyrs was so good, that I need to watch it a 2nd time. I just need to be in the right state of mind so I can fully grasp the concept
