This is from the mid-late 70's. It is not Argento, but has the same flavour. I know a lot about it, except the title. I caught most of it on HBO a couple of decades ago, learned the title and then forgot it.
Here's how it goes: takes place in a lovely urban Italian city. The hero is a woman, a journalist, or I believe, a television reporter, on the trail of a psychotic killer, a really crazy one who is exceptionally vicious and bizarre.
Because she's a pretty young woman and has made a couple of mistakes, she decides to follow the case on her own. She does well, early on, getting the name of a likely suspect (all this happening as the murders are getting more frequent and violent).
She goes to this guy's rooftop apartment in the center of town.
He's not home.
She lets herself in.
It's a big beautiful place. She looks around briefly, doesn't spot anything unusual, until she's about to leave.
To make a long story short, she find a rotting corpse in a closet.
She freaks out, and is about to run out of there, when she hears a key in the door and has to hide in the closet with the body and other gross stuff.
All the while, the psychopath is pacing around, speaking in tongues, talking to himself and sharpening implements. He, apparently, has no idea that she's in the closet.
I would appreciate anybody giving me a heads up on the title and/or director.
