Just watched this and WOW. I finally found a decently disturbing movie! I was in total disgust during a couple parts there, but definitely a great flick. I must own it.

My english cut DVD runs 95mins

Most of the cuts are of the "pedophilia" scenes involving children. And the "gag" scene. Nothing major. Its still explicit.

I put an order for it at the Library. If it can get it (it being a foreign film will be tricky), I'll review it for BthroughZ. However, if it is the cut version, I might pass cause even though I find it sick as shit where the film goes (it will not be a review I'll be looking forward too), I'd rather not review a tamed version, say it's alright and someone checks it out only to find the complete version.

Fango got the scoop from distributor Invincible Pictures that Srdjan Spasojevic’s movie will play select theaters across North America May 13—in an edited version. The unrated SERBIAN FILM will be released exclusively via digital media distribution outfit FlixFling the same day. “This is an excellent opportunity for FlixFling to offer something totally exclusive to our growing community,” says the company’s CEO, Tom Ashley. “It was always our intention to release this film uncut, but given the recent charges against Sitges director Angel Sala, we have decided to release an edited version. We believe this film deserves to be seen as the filmmakers originally intended and hope to be able to release A SERBIAN FILM uncut in the future.”

I was looking at this the other day..

TL;DR incoming...

Just finished watching the "edited" version. Wow. I was planning to just watch a few minutes, up to where things started to get messed up and then switch off, satisfied that I at least checked it out. It was not what I was expecting at all having read reviews trashing it. The fact that this was a real film, not piece of exploitation fluff caught me off guard. It was good. I wouldn't suggest it to any but a few cinephiles I know but this was not trash. This had a point. This wasn't "torture porn" this was about it.

What was shocking wasn't what you could actually see but the intent and the context of what you were seeing the characters do. Not the most explicit sex, not the goriest gore (of course, there are several minutes cut from this version). This film didn't give a wink and a nudge at the audience like certain one word horror franchises of late that simply go for contrived, gratuitous "murder set pieces" and figure the audience doesn't really need anyone to care about or a point to be made. In my mind they actually condescend to their audiences because deep down I don't think they think their audience can even tell the difference or care.

This was tragedy, in the Greek sense. It's not something that modern audiences are used to seeing, not true tragedy. Studios are scared shitless of it. Even for movies that are supposed to end badly, they really can't go all the way. But like the crazy director in this thing keeps going on about, there's "truth" here. At the end of it I sat there and was kind of awe struck.

Somehow it didn't disturb me as strongly as Martyrs did when I saw it a few months ago. There were images from that film that haunted my thoughts and sleep for weeks after. It didn't even leave me with the same "wrecked" feeling I had at the end of seeing the NR cut of Requiem For a Dream at one of the little art house theatres in LA when it was first released. It was messed up but I couldn't help but think some of outrage at this film is feigned, as a form of social pantomime (not unlike the competition in church for who can say 'hallelujah' the loudest and most often).

The worst situations in that film, "the two" that are most offensive and most outrageous, but also highly tragic and neither gratuitous or pointless or merely to rape a reaction from the viewer, in other contexts have been used in supposed depictions of humor. I'm not talking your run of the mill disgusting joke told over beers with buddies but have you ever heard the infamous "joke" called The Aristocrats?

There's a documentary consisting of interviews with several contemporary (for the late '90s/early '00s) comedians regarding this joke that's been told for years where every person telling it is supposed to embellish it with their own sickest sexual situations involving a father, mother, son, daughter and at least one pet. If I remember right the tradition of this joke goes all the way back to Bob Hope or earlier. Legend has it Chevy Chase has the longest and most depraved telling of it, something like 30min from start to finish for the one "joke".

Now, I have a pretty good sense of humor but I couldn't finish watching this documentary. It wasn't funny to me. That joke, the idea of talking about these very similar types of sexual situations (minus the blood and killing) in a supposedly humorous context, taking it that far, I found offensive. The Aristocrats is offensive where A Serbian Film is relevant.

A Serbian Film, to me, represents unregulated Capitalism in a global market. That's what you get with that level of regard for basic humanity. It's happening around the world. And when you think things have gone as far as they could some corporate asshole will say, "start with the little one," be it a person, village, race or country. It has happened and will continue happening. Yes, it's a political film like has been discussed but it's really just seventh grade literature level interpretation to think the commentary went only as deep as Serbian or even Soviet region politics. This is the world. This is Walmart. This is De Beers. This is Monsanto. This is Halliburton.

It's a real shame this thing is getting slammed in such an unenlightened way. I can't say I really enjoyed it but I got it. Or at least I got something. I took something away from it that may or may not be what the filmmaker intended but that's fine. Very few movies do this so when I'm that moved I take notice and really try to think about what this filmmaker has made me think about. That they've made me think at all is refreshing. And nothing that happens in this film is any more extreme than what scores of civilized, reputable people all over have supposedly laughed about through the ages. That actually offends me.

It's also the first film shot on a RED that I've actually loved or even enjoyed the look of. Martyrs and Murder Set Pieces are like children movies compared to A Serbian Movie Uncut. There was no intent the original version.

Do it, I appreciated it more the second/third time 'round. I wasn't just waiting for shock value. I noticed all the little things within the film.

Not endorsing the site, just info where you can purchase uncut version. It is considered a "premium" title which of course means ya gotta ante up. Haven't seen it yet, but def not 1 for the kiddies to watch
