Well, I just caught the flick and I thought it was aight. I liked it, but not as much as I hoped I would. For one, contrary to what the trailer led us to believe, there really isn't a whole lot of action...
There's good action in the beginning when Donnie's character is single-handedly ending WWI and a couple brief (and I mean brief!) action bits in the middle, but the action doesn't really pick up again until the last 15-minutes when he donnes his Chen Zhen outfit once again and starts whoopin' on the local Japanese.
The rest of the flick is pretty much just filled with a lot of Chinese hating on Japanese and vice versa talk, with a little horribly-developed romance between Donnie and Qi Shu. The romance angle was pointless and essentially led nowhere, leading me to believe that it was simply there as filler.
I dunno much about the Chen Zhen character, but in this film he was pretty much a superhero, which I wasn't expecting. I thought he was just some dude dat knew how to kick ass and wore a cheapo mask, but there are scenes where it just seemed like he had some abnormal strength, and a few other scenes of him just standing on a ledge lookin' down on the city, all Batman-like, which I thought was pretty silly.
In the end, the flick is still entertaining and, I mean, it's F'n Donnie Yen! The dude kicks ass, end of story. I'd throw a 7/10 rating at it, but it's a really low 7. I was just expecting more action and less silliness. Never-the-less, worth a check if you just want to see Donnie be a badass as usual, and the flick itself has its moments.
