    Getting Music?

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost (Ball park) to get a well known song in a Indi feature?

    Cheers,

It all depends on the song...and exactly how many seconds of it you want to use. But they can range anywhere from a few hundred or so to the tens of thousands of dollars range. Then you have to make sure the cost covers possible television broadcasts as well as foreign distribution. Honestly, it's really not worth buying music for small, independent films. I would just send out a press release asking for up and coming bands looking for free publicity. You'd be surprised with the quality that will come through.

Fruity Loops, Imovie, and Garage band is your friend - All the sounds are free use

I am using songs that I like as well as copyrighted music for my film, but only for the cut of the film that I'm making available for free download online. However the version that I'm selling on dvd through Amazon and Netflix has piracy free music or all original music. So basically when people download the movie they get to hear the film as I intended but when they order their dvd's the music is replaced with piracy free music.

    Thanks,

I like the idea of asking for up and coming bands.

^ I would still ask those bands to sign something because if a studio or label ever comes along and obtains the rights to their music then your screwed.

yeah your best bet is to have them sign a release that states that you retain the use of the song for all arms of distribution (theatrical, televicion, video, VOD...etc), but they still own the song.
