Resistance forms against Hollywood's 3-D push
Some filmmakers, viewers believe two dimensions are plenty

    By MICHAEL CIEPLY

    updated 8/16/2010 4:05:40 PM ET
Share Print Font: + - LOS ANGELES — A joke making the rounds online involves a pair of red and green glasses and some blurry letters that say, “If you can’t make it good, make it 3-D.”

The fans of flat film have a motto. But do they have a movement?

While Hollywood rushes dozens of 3-D movies to the screen — nearly 60 are planned in the next two years, including “Saw VII” and “Mars Needs Moms!” — a rebellion among some filmmakers and viewers has been complicating the industry’s jump into the third dimension.

It’s hard to measure the audience resistance — online complaints don’t mean much when crowds are paying the premium 3-D prices. But filmmakers are another matter, and their attitudes may tell whether Hollywood’s 3-D leap is about to hit a wall.

Several influential directors took surprisingly public potshots at the 3-D boom during the recent Comic-Con International pop culture convention in San Diego.

“When you put the glasses on, everything gets dim,” said J. J. Abrams, whose two-dimensional “Star Trek” earned $385 million at the worldwide box office for Paramount Pictures last year.

Joss Whedon, who was onstage with Mr. Abrams, said that as a viewer, “I’m totally into it. I love it.” But Mr. Whedon then said he flatly opposed a plan by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to convert “The Cabin in the Woods,” a horror film he produced but that has not yet been released, into 3-D. “What we’re hoping to do,” Mr. Whedon said, “is to be the only horror movie coming out that is not in 3-D.”

I don't really care for the 3D. A movie in 3D doesn't necessarily make me want to see it more, if anything, I'd be weary of it, especially if the 3D was added in post.

Granted I don't go to theaters much anymore but don't most movie offer the option?
As long as there is an option to see a non-3D version I don't really see the harm. Something being in 3D have never made me rush to see it but with experimentation and time maybe some cool stuff can be done with it.

I agree....for the most part seeing "3D" attached to a horror would more than likely push me away from the film. With 3D added post production it more than likely is always blurry and a weak attempt of 3D. Leave the 3D for the kid films and maybe some action films.

I don't think there is much room at all in horror for it.....oh wait "Piranha 3D" could prove me wrong :lol2::lol2::lol2:

I really and deeply hope there will be NO FUTURE for 3D in horror movies. I don't like this fucking trend. It doesn't make the movies better, it doesn't make the scripts/scenarios better so I don't care. The future lies in creativity for me and nothing else. Let the directors and people put their fingers out of their ass and try to create something new and interesting instead of using tricks like 3D.

It doesn't even impact movies. Most movies in 3-D will come out in 2-D as well. So, what's the point of complaining about it? Personally, I hate 3-D movies. I put those glasses on and everything seems to get blurry to me and out of focus, then it gives me a headache and sometimes makes me feel nauseated. I wear regular glasses, so I either have to put those 3-D glasses on over my regular glasses, which is not comfortable, or remove my regular glasses and put on 3-D which makes everything worse. No thanks.

A movie being 3-D doesn't make me want to see it more than opposed to 2-D. Never been a fan of 3-D in the first place.

Yes it would....but on the matter of 3-D I've been saying that 3-D does take a lot away from a film, with one being that it is a big distraction. I just think Hollywood has went too far with it, and just because AVATAR successfully used 3-D the right way, doesn't mean everything is meant to be in 3-D. Even if you look at the summer box office, the 2-D movies have made the highest grossing amounts over some of the 3-D movies that have been released this year (with the exception of Toy Story 3).

I just think Hollywood needs to go back to that old fashion feeling of movies and create something that's oirginal and entertaining before turning it into 3-D. As far as the future of 3-D, I see it going NOWHERE, as I think everything that is coming out in 3-D is seriously bound to fail, as you can see some are dying very slowly as is.

At first I was excited about 3-D movies. Until I saw a couple and if anything it ruined the movies for me. I hate the glasses, and nothing really looks 3-D, besides maybe a few scenes. It then ruins the 2-D movie because you could tell what parts were supposed to be in 3-D. I hope the trend ends soon. I am looking forward to 3-D video games though. That will be awesome, well hopefully.

I like 3D and the people that don't really have no idea what they're talking about, if the above arguments are what they're going to use. What exactly is wrong with it, except for the inflated ticket price? I mean i'm aware this board is infested with horror n00bz and mainstream shills, but come on. The movies really weren't any good before they went 3D. 3D did not make the films worse, it's just something new for the directors to blame their failures on, as they already were unable to produce "good" horror films in 2D. Lets take a look here , Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 or H2 if you prefer vs My Bloody Valentine 3D
Both are modern remakes that are in no way original, yet one is good and the other is

Look most of the films aren't gonna be good anyways, Clash of the Titans was downright awful and it was filmed in 2D, then they added 3D post haste. Obviously because the film was wretched but again it was a "2D" film that sucked, like H2. The real problem is that they can't make any good or great horror films in hollywood anymore, and the answer lies with you dumbasses, that run out and see whatever they're pushing. They are paying people with no talent because everyone rushes out to see the newest POS. Just like when everyone on this board is bitching and moaning about their hate for remakes, and how they're dying for an original movie to come out. Yet when an original movie does come out (Splice) almost nobody goes to the theater and watches it. Yet when ANOES remake or F13th remake dropped everyone here ran out and watched them. So quit being hypocrites and put the blame where it's due.

Lack of talent, and a dumb-ed down audience is the real crime in modern film making, not the use of 3D technology.

I too like 3D movies. Avatar was great in 3D. The animated kids movies I've seen were good. Its sad to say that most of the new movies that are good are animated kids movies. Every film maker out there these days is so caught up in making a "twist at the end that you'll never see coming", that you always see coming. Thats the problem for me not the 3D. Its like you watch these movies & your supossed to feel for the characters that they didn't bother to develope any background on. Then you watch them run from a killer or threat of some sort & in the end, either they die abruptly (or even worse, turns out that they are the killer or some crap).

The problem with a lot of the movies they are making today is that they have really dumbed down the script so the avarage teenage idiot who lacks the ability follow anything that is more complex then an episode of The Hills or a show where a raping idiot chooses which white girl he's gonna... well I'll say date. To much stupidity in film making today. The film makers are so comsumed with special effects they don't care about the scripts anymore. Thats why I like older horror movies, even that bad cheesy 80s horror movies are usually much better then what hollywood churns out today.
