Director: Chad Ferrin
Horror/Gore
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387254/
The story is about low-life Eric Hayes (Timothy Muskatell) who is a stringer. A stringer is a reporter who gathers footage of police chases, murder and general mayhem. Eric then sells this footage to people like the seedy entrepreneur and broadcaster played by Joseph Pilato ......Captain Rhodes from Day of the Dead.... One night, while lurking the backstreets of L.A., he stumbles across a group of creepy looking people who are tearing apart and devouring a woman. He doesn't help, he films it. Thinking he has footage that's worth a fortune, he tries to sell it but discovers that the camera didn't have a tape in it. Fuck! So, he then goes on a quest to find these ghouls and capture their deeds on camera. However, the more he searches, the more he is drawn into their dark and forbidding world. The grainy and grimy look of the film perfectly fits the mood and tone of this film. The FX are impressive and Ferrin knows how to handle gore scenes well, never staying too long, but long enough so you get the idea. Apart from the excessive brutality , "The Ghouls'' is an interesting character study about the depths of the human soul.
Movie Trivia:Chad Ferrin sold his 1968 Ford Mustang to make the film.
The Ghouls won the 2003 "Sinners Award" at the Saints and Sinners Film Festival.
My Thoughts: I like Chad Ferrin's style. This is one of four films I saw by him. Easter Bunny Kill! Kill!, Someone's Knocking at the Door and Unspeakable. Ummmm, I will post a thread on the last film when I can come up with some words for it
Film Style: 7.. Gritty just like the filthy back streets Eric lurks.
Gore:7..Fuckin beautiful
Shock Value: 7
Overall Rating: 7/10......Lucky number 7 across the board!!!
