Charles Danvers was not your average prisoner, tired of stealing body parts from corpses he became a notorious 1920’s serial killer. He was eventually caught and convicted after numerous murders on pregnant women, in which he stole their placentas to maintain his youthful looks. He has one more unholy idea in his insane brain to reveal before disappearing from the face of the earth...
Then we meet four prisoners in their gloomy cell, where the world outside is becoming only a memory and their grasp on what keeps them sane is slowly being lost behind the stone walls. Hope comes to them from the unlikeliest of places, a journal left behind by Danver.
After a period of settling in, it’s not long before the four prisoners discover a hole in the wall that leads them to finding a diary of previous prisoner Charles Danver. When Carrere then reads out one of the books passages, it creates a flame in Devil imagery. The four cellmates decide to read further and try and use the book to escape from the prison.
Often feeling more like a stage play than a film, Malefique works largely due to a solid cast with intriguing characters that maintain your attention. Clovis Cornillac does a good job of the wannabe transsexual Marcus, but it is Dimitri Rataud who steals the film in an entertaining sense with his portrayal of compulsive-eater Paquerette. He's first seen having his finger removed (by Marcus) so that he can enjoy a ‘holiday’ in the infirmary. Paquerette is like an excitable puppy who eats watches, bugs and his six month old baby sister. He wets the bed and makes vagina collages on the wall. He was my favourite...
The appearance of the ‘so obvious' the Devil... Hippolyte Picus with his wild red hair and digital video camera felt unnecessary and is a slight distraction...it didn't fit in with the flow of the film. We are then treated to a nice gory lead-up to the final twist, as Marcus, Lassalle and Carrere all ultimately find (and receive) what they’re looking for.....Brilliant!!

Film Style:Nice, I like the look. It is shot mainly in their cell...including rats and cockaroaches
Gore: not much but some nice bloody cringing scenes
Characters:awesome!! I connected with all of them.
My Thoughts: Great, I mean GREAT film. It kept me glued to the pc screen but I kinda knew what was gonna happen but it's okay because it was presented beautifully. French films are awwwweesome!
