I think he is playing it safe because even he knows his movies are all over the place. He has his own vision and will run with it no matter if anybody else can decipher what the hell he is trying to say. Gotta respect the dude for making what he wants the way he wants to do it but at some point he should really take a step back and criticize his own work a bit. Maybe he can actually make a decent movie.

WTF...you guys are some simple, literal bitches sometimes.
She meets "the lords" in this scene. We transition from the hallway of her apartment building into a cathedral. Obviously this is a form of hallucination and/or glamour created to further impress on her mind that she's dealing with people/beings that should not be resisted. This is, in effect, a means to convey to the audience the weight of the spiritual pressure being put on Sheri's character's mind.
It works on multiple levels, where we can assume, though not 100%, that she sees what we're seeing. What's important is the emotional reaction created for the audience so that they have some sense of what is happening to the central character.
