Another thing to keep in mind about Carpenter is that he disappeared for a good 10 years, so any memory of anything he last did being remotely "good" will likely be a very old one. For me, his last work I enjoyed was Vampires. After that he did the abysmal Ghosts of Mars and then disappeared only to return and do The Ward for whatever reason
