Actually, he and they are a lot more right than you.

"Arthouse" isn't really a genre any more than "indie" is a genre for music. While these films may not universally qualify as "art films" the category of international+arthouse is actually very accurate, because it reflects where they are most likely to be seen. Not only that, it was foreign cinema that essentially created the "arthouse" cinemas in major metropolitan areas and college towns expressly as an alternative to Hollywood product.

A city's local "arthouse" cinema(s) will be the most likely place someone can see a film like "I Saw the Devil". Unless there was some kind of big Oscar push these sorts of films aren't going to be playing at the Tinseltown-50 or AMC-100.

So district 9 is an arthouse flick. Stop acting like a fool, they put them together for listing purposes only. The movie I saw in school, that was 48 minutes of people going up and down an elevator was an arthouse movie. I saw the devil is not. Maybe I'd agree with you if this was tge 70's/80's when a movie of this caliber would play in an arthouse or even a grindhouse for tge lower class. But not now when a film like this is so accessible. And because a film is foreign doesn't make it arthouse. High tension, ils, frontiers, dog soldiers, and the el santo movies show as Arthouse and international. None of them are arthouse, but they all are international.

Actually, yes they are. One or two of those might have gotten limited release into corporate, mainstream theatres but I guarantee you they played arthouses in the US, along with most other international films.

    "Genre" does not preclude "arthouse".

Because a movie plays in an arthouse movie doran't make it an arthouse movie in the sense prince was going for. He brought up it's story, cinematography, music, and pacing. None if that makes any of these films an arthouse movie. And there is a big difference between an arthouse, and an independent theatre. If in the 70's they showed Cutizen Kane or Casablanca on 42nd st, it wouldn't make either one a grindhouse picture.

You're actually making the argument even more for this movie being not just "arthouse" but the slightly less broad "art film" when all of these things actually are more specific to this classic definition than simply referring to the place you are most likely to see it.

Beyond that, I can't really say, having not seen this particular film. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess it doesn't follow a simple narrative structure, based on cause and effect with a nice tidy conclusion, featuring easy to read, developed characters that represent a stock "type" of person. I might be wrong, but I'm guessing something like I Saw the Devil deals more with a character's internal conflict and motivation and this is what drives the film along.

You're right, it depends on what they show. I know of plenty of independent theatres that show mainstream, corporate, American film. If they mostly show independent and international film (especially the later) they are "arthouse".

Conan the barbarian is listed as Sci-fi and fantasy... Now can u tell me which genre that fits in? Rottentomatoes groups things in broad categories, it is not trying to group any of these films in an arthouse grouping. Like I said district 9 is nowhere near an arthouse movie. Yet it shows as arthouse and In ternational because, and only because it is foreign.

How was my arguement derailed... you failed to answer two of my questions to show you a point... a. Is District 9 an arthouse movie? and b. If The showed Casablanca on 42ns street in the 70's would it be a grindhouse movie. Just because something is shown somewhere doesn't make it a certain type of movie. When I was a kid a porno theatre used to show Rocky Horror Picture show on Saturday nights... didn't make it a porn movie. You like to argue everyone on this board, and your wrong this time. You like to think your idea is right when it isn't. Rottentomatoes list the movie " I saw the Devil" as an Arthouse and Internaotional, only because it is INternational.... not because it is an arthouse movie, because it is not.

The reason I was being "cheeky" is because you missed my point.,.. I didn't meen a movie theatre that is independently owned, I mean one that shows Independent movies.... i.e movies not part of a big Studio.

The Alamo Drafthouse shows tons of foreign movies.... guess what it isn't an arthouse.
