TOP 300 HORROR FILMS!!!

Hey everybody! Really happy to be done with this ... at lease this version of it. Been working on a Top 300 Horror Movies list for a year now. Most of that time was spent developing a set of criteria to score the movies (as subjective as possible). The biggest challenge with a subjective scale is that some movies are ranked lower than movies I like less. However, I feel the 20 item scale does a pretty good job of evaluating each horror film's integrity and value. So here it is .. I will start in reverse order. The number to the right of each film is the average score 1-10. Later I will post the 20 question criteria. Anybody has any friendly suggestions, or if I left off a movie that should definitely be here, please let me know and I'll put it through the scoring system. Maybe we'll get a 350. Again, this is definitely not all of the horror films I've seen or enjoy, but I thought I would start at 300.

This is the 20 question criteria I used to grade each film. Each one gets 10 points... average taken at the end.

A. Did it offer something new?
B. Was a franchise built from this film?
C. Did this film have a character who ended up becoming a horror icon?
D. Did it create a specific mood in the viewer?
E. Did the music or lack of music create appropriate atmosphere?
F. Did the sound create tension or evoke emotions from the viewer?
G. Did the film offer something worthwhile to a previously used idea?
H. Was it scary enough to cause any sort of sleep disruption in the avg. person?
I. Was the story interesting?
J. Did the story make sense?
K. Did it flow well from scene to scene?
L. Is it worth watching over and over?
M. Was this film entertaining?
N. Did the characters help the story appropriately?
O. Were the effects appropriate?
P. Were the effects ground-breaking or impressive?
Q. Was the look of the film successful in creating good/appropriate atmosphere?
R. Did it add something to or help change the direction of its respective genre?
S. Was it scary to the avg. person in any age group? (not just kids)
T. Was this film original? (not a remake)? If it is a remake, how good is it?

man...I have to say this is def a passion for you to answer those questions for every single one of those films I wouldn't say fail...dedicated maybe...with a lot of time and patience...saying that I can't really say anything bad I mean.....damn that is a lot of work

I like the concept behind this, but having one of your first posts as a list of films you've seen is definitely not a good way to start. Lists in general usually aren't a wise thing to post unless there's more reason behind it. UHM has just seen one too many lists

not to be too critical but you have some generalities in there like
Was the story interesting?
Did the story make sense?
Did it flow well from scene to scene?
Is it worth watching over and over?
Was this film entertaining?
Was the look of the film successful in creating good/appropriate atmosphere?

without other worth while considerations like Cinematography, script, dialog, directing ability, camera work, acting, editing, sets, etc that generally go into whether a film is "good" or not...also if you are going to do a fun non-cinematic assessment then where the fuck is the nudity category?!

I give this assignment a C+ good effor but needs improvement

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2 is number 13???? WTF I thought that sequel was pretty bad IMO, not even top 300

PS I started reading from 1 and made it to there. and the exorcist should be even higher at least before F13 2 and Predator. Cannot read no more, sorry

haha i figured there would be issues like that.. i did try ratings scales with things like cinematography (how does the look of the film work) and stuff... and I realize some of the films seem to be in an order some people may not like, but it's a top "whatever" scale... no matter what criteria you're judging it by, your personal preference of the film is going to factor in... and as i said, this thing isn't perfect and that's why I posted it to get feedback... i agree with a lot of what you all are saying so it's great feedback... personally, i thinkg f134 is a great film.. personally have very fond memories of nightmare 2... sorry bout it i think exorcist definitely needs to be higher as well

If you had to give a note/rate to decent/ok movies according to your system, what would be their note/rate? I mean: are your notes/rates pretty nice or strict?

meh.... enjoyed the list, always like seeing someone else's opinion on prefs- didn't pay attention to the rating process though. Props for having the patience to bang down a 300 flick list though.

lol... yall are killing me.. i wish i had just copied and pased this but really it took a ton of work.. lol... i realize the many problems.. and i realize nightmare 2 shouldn't be that high.. i do like the film more than most but not that much more...

to answer the question about halloween 2... the remake halloween 2 is in the top 80... mid 70s... has (Zombie) beside it...

Based on suggestions, I worked up a new criteria list last night that I think will be way better.. 50 items to rate each movie on so I think it should catch a lot of the problems the previous criteria missed...

BTW, there are plenty of other movies that aren't on here, simply because i haven't gotten to them yet... I really just glanced at my movies a year or so ago, eyballed about 300 movies and wrote them down to be rated...

oh and Ghostbusters... come on man... to a kid that was scary.. lol.. but really, the amount of effects and stuff in the movie, i feel it deserves to be in the list.. it's no less scary than gremlins...

Again, thanks for the feedback, it helped me brainstorm a bunch of different ways this can be improved... now that I have a solid base to go from, it will be quicker... if anybody cares, I will post the new criteria so I can get some opinions... but i won't waste your time otherwise..

also, about the nudity criteria, I really wanted to put that or a sex appeal item on there.. but really you'd be screwing movies like The Exorcist, Alien, and a host of other movies that don't show any boobies
