I've been waiting for a sweet new gangster flick to come out of Korea and it looks like I've finally found it. The Man From Nowhere was reportedly one of the highest-grossing films in the Korean box office for 2010 and with good reason. The flick has heart, blood, violence, and an although somewhat cliched, still an interesting and engaging story.
The flick also boasts and handful of interesting key villains, like the crazy young boss and his level-headed brother, and a guy who speaks everything in English () and is badass with a gun and his own hands.Tae-shik is an ex-special agent whose tragic past has made him distance himself from the world. He now lives in solitude and runs a small pawnshop. The only people he now sees are the few pawnshop customers and So-mi, the young girl who lives next door. So-mi has also been neglected by the world and as she and Tae-shik begin to spend more time together, the two gradually open themselves to one another and become friends. Then one day, So-mi suddenly disappears. So-mi’s mother becomes involved in a major crime causing both her and So-mi to get kidnapped. Tae-shik is drawn back out into the world in a frantic search for So-mi’s whereabouts. In order to save So-mi, his one and only friend in this world, Tae-shik makes a certain arrangement with the crime mob. While So-mi is still nowhere to be found, the police begin to chase after Tae-shik. With the police and the underground mob close on his tail, Tae-shik continues his frantic search for So-mi and his hidden past slowly becomes revealed...
Sure there could've been a bit more action in parts and some of the dialogue was cheesy at times, but the film itself is still an enjoyable watch, especially for those (like myself) who are into gangster pics, namely those from South Korea. When there is action it's pretty fast and badass, as the filmmakers spare no expense to dish out the blood, especially towards the end when there's an awesome battle with knives
Worth a look, especially if you're into Gangster flicks. 7/10 (but a high 7-rating)
