This is a Japanese flick directed by Hirokazu Koreeda and starring Korean actress Doona Bae, whom many may remember as the older sister (I think?) from the South Korean creature feature, The Host. As the name suggests, the movie revolves around an air doll or more commonly referred as "blow up doll", whom mysteriously comes to life one day. While her owner is away at work, the doll explores the town, meets its people, and even gets a job at a video store, where she falls for the clerk there. As the film progresses we see witness the doll experience life and its simple pleasures, eventually causing ripples in the dolls existence, especially when she starts to want to be more human.
This is a rather strange, but interesting film. Those familiar with director Hirokazu Koreeda's work can expect some good character development and human (and non-human) drama. My favorite moments involved the doll's take on the lives of the people she comes across throughout the flick. Artsy at times, the film doesn't really veer towards the odd and somewhat confusing until nearing its climax, where it seemed like the filmmaker didn't quite know how to end it. Regardless, those looking for an interesting and somewhat original pic may want to give this a look.
