Trying to get some life into the Underground forum, so I figured Richard Kern was worthy of a thread.
"Richard Kern (born 1954 in North Carolina) is a New York underground filmmaker, writer and photographer. He first came to underground prominence as part of the underground cultural explosion in the East Village of New York City in the 1980s, with erotic and experimental films featuring underground personalities of the time such as Lydia Lunch, David Wojnarowicz, Sonic Youth, Kembra Pfahler, and Henry Rollins in movies like "The Right Side of My Brain" and "Fingered." Like many of the musicians around him, Kern had a deep interest in the aesthetics of extreme sex, violence, and perversion and was one of the leading lights of Nick Zedd's coined Cinema of Transgression." (Taken from Wikipedia)
Richard Kern is probably the best filmmaker from the CoT movement. Nick Zedd isn't too bad either, but Richard Kern was always one step ahead. He has some really interesting films, be it his early underground stuff, or his later model/softcore stuff. He just seems to be one of the few from the movement with actual talent. I have these two DVDs and recommend both if you think it's your type of films:
The Hardcore Collection contains:
Death Vallet '69
Right Side of My Brain
You Killed Me First
The Bitches
The Sewing Circle
Fingered
Submit To Me Now
My Nightmare
Horoscope
X is Y
Manhattan Love Suicides
Submit To Me
The Evil Camera Man
Extra Action (and Extra Hardcore) contains:
Extra Action
The King of Sex
Pierce
Scooter and Jinx
Catholic
Nazi
Goodbye 42nd Street
I'd say if you don't know of his work, start with The Hardcore Collection. It's not only his best stuff, but it's probably more what underground fans would want.
