I didn't care for the characters so the violence didn't affect me.
Spoiler...
I know Yasmine is pregnant, and they get tortured in extremely awful ways, but that doesn't really mean much. The political context doesn't seem to really add anything to the story beyond the very beginning, and the two guys who get seduced by the girls at the inn pretty much deserved to die because they were so stupid. They have a dinner scene just like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and you learn the basics about the crazy family, one of whom is predictably sympathetic. I did like the rejected children in the mine, but they don't really do anything. They don't kill Farid, and it's clear they're really not a threat anymore by the time Yasmine is down there. The actress who plays Yasmine gives a great performance, but the story is nothing new so it's pointless. You know what's coming. I'm too desensitized to torture scenes for them to shock me unless I feel like I actually know the characters and they seem like real three-dimensional human beings. In a movie like this, I'm always just waiting for the victims to fight back, but of course, all of them except one will die (I'm not counting Eva since she was pretty much part of the family by then and didn't get tortured in any scenes we saw). Also, you know no one can escape until the end. I did like Yasmine biting and tearing out Gilberte's throat in the finale although it seemed silly Gilberte survived the explosion. Overall, I didn't enjoy it. I'm tired of dumb characters going someplace they shouldn't, meeting a bunch of psychos or a monster, and getting tortured/killed. To each their own though. The FX, acting, cinematography, sound, etc. was fine. I just want more from the story and characters.
