I can't fathom how hard it must be to drum and sing at the same time. Mastodon always puts on a solid performance, although the vocals were a bit iffy for obvious reasons

I seen them in concert like 4 times. Some of my earliest teenage concerts. Then I saw them perform on their final tour and they were awful. His solo stuff sucked. But wow, that's insane. Grew up with Static-X. Nu-Metal got me into the harder stuff I am into now and I owe a lot of my music interest to them and the other bands of the time period alike.

I was never a huge fan but they had a couple of songs I liked and I'd seen them in concert a couple of times and they put on a really good show. Always sad to see an artist die too young, because the world will forever be deprived of whatever creations they'd yet to unveil.

He was an avid drug user. Plus, who dies in their sleep at 48? I hope it wasn't drug related, but still kind of calling BS on that one. I'm sure drugs shortened his life somehow, even if it wasn't an overdose.

That's kinda my thought... that perhaps years of the rock-n-roll lifestyle probably shortened his life a bit. Granted, more people drop dead in their 40's than you think.. sometimes from nothing more than bad genetics and an awful diet.

I think for the hell of it I am going to do a top 20 death metal albums and review each one. Try to poop one or two reviews out a week. I always say to myself, "damn this is a good record" and jam out to it, but I never keep a list. I'm a structured guy so I feel like this would be cool to do. Plus, I have seen some people comment saying they are going to go through this topic for metal bands to listen to, so I feel like it could help them too. Today I'll make out the list and tomorrow I'll do my first review.

EDIT: While composing my list, I found there are way too many for a top 20, so I'm dividing it by doing two lists. One list will be dedicated to newer death metal albums (from around 00-current) and the second list will be oldschool death metal albums from 85-99
