The dictionary definition of the word bedevilled is "to torment mercilessly; plague.

This is the story of Hye-won, a bank worker in Seoul who, stressed and frazzled by life, decides to return to her hometown on a remote island for the first time in 15 years. And by remote, I mean remote – it takes ages to get there by ferry, and only nine people are living there now. Unfortunately, aside from her old friend Bok-nam and Bok-nam’s daughter, everyone on the island is seriously nasty and disturbed. The longer Hye-won stays there, the more ugly secrets from the past get unearthed and the more dreadful things become. Eventually, something has got to give, and soon an explosion of violence ensues.







This is a dramatic piece of work and overall a solid flick. Bedevilled may be a classic revenger’s tragedy, but Jang Cheol-So’s debut is all the more effective for taking its time in getting to the blood-drenched retribution. He creates an atmosphere of slowly mounting dread that builds to an incredibly bloody final act.

8/10, check this film out.

Been wanting to check it for a while. Been sittin' on my HD since it came out

You should really give this a watch..soon. It is slow in starting but I didn't mind because it was building up this super tense feeling of dread. The music was fantastic. It fit perfectly with each scene. Yeong-hie Seo is the actress who played the abused Bok-nam and she was amazing! I read in an article that she came away from this role extremely shaken up..
This film is up for a Korean award of some sort. It deserves to win.

Whilst I quite enjoyed this, there was always the nagging feeling that it couldn't quite decide what kind of film it wanted to be. It was a bit messy at times, and played out almost as if the screen writer rushed the script off in order to go on a quick vacation. Still, it was decent enough, but certainly not one of the more memorable Korean films that I've seen.

I think it's a mixture of genres, never plays to fright easily and has the power to move freely from one genre to another, mixing horror and drama.

As for drama, is emotionally charged, as to terror, is loaded with gore and violence where they are necessary.

Finally watched this yesterday.....solid crazy good flick

Just caught this flick. I loved it. My first reaction was: anyone who's been in a truly violent relationship as the victim has, undoubtedly, wanted to do what this character did: punish/maim the person and those who sat by and looked the other way or refused to help. It's an emotional movie and I appreciated it for what it was. I did notice it had some pacing issues but I can forgive that considering the solid acting and story.

8/10.
