Hi,
I'm new to the board and just found this discussion and maybe someone can help.
I saw a horror movie in the 90's on VHS that I loved but I cannot for the life of me remember the name.
The story is told by a young girl talking to a group of french soldiers.
It was set in the 1800's and was about a group of settlers that set out on a raft down a river to find a new place to live. There was a creepy preacher and old couple a couple of kids and their parents and a guide. There is also a red headed mute teenage girl with them. She has curly hair and just mumbles.
They find an abandoned settlement in the woods and resettle there. They encounter two Shoshone Indians but the guide speaks to them and is told that the settlement is build on cursed land. Cursed by a forest witch. The preacher in the group shoots at the Indians and they run away.
They disregard the warning and settle in. Soon all kinds of strange stuff starts happening and the ghosts of the previous settlers come back trying to warn them of the witch. They have been turned into trees and you can see their faces in the trees.
The red headed teenager disappears and when they find her again she has special powers because she has become a good witch. In the end the red headed teen girl fights the evil witch who's spirit is in a tree.
The two children are put on a raft, or put in a barrel and floated down the river to escape.
They are saved by a French speaking band of soldiers and they tell the story of what happened to them.
Please, I loved this movie and would like to find it again.
Thanks much.
