I saw this movie last night, and I have to say for a sequel to the original it was pretty well done. But in "The Collector/The Collection" perspective. I can understand the hate this movie gets, especially when it tries to be connected to the original (which tragically to this day I still haven't watched but will soon enough) and the expectations are set high, but it's not only that.
The script is pretty much a rushed-up piece that took the safe Devil's Rejects route but with Leatherface thrown in, the characters can be a bit meh but I can't remember them being too douchey or annoying for that matter, I find the CGI effects to be some of the most useless in a movie that should be only about the gory set pieces being in front of the camera than having CGI blood thrown into your face and it gets ridiculous, it has some horror cliches to fill it up a bit but they end up having a nice twist after each one.
But it's not really THAT bad. As a sequel to the original I do think it holds up (yes, I know, that's ignorant of me to say because I haven't seen it, but I've known about Leatherface for a while and have a soft spot for him), it's not the greatest, but it does TRY to do something different and something that can be a little more acceptable than other sequels to source material that just don't give a fuck and just turn to shit for sake of being shit. (I'm looking at you, Silent Hill:Revelation)
I do think the parts with the characters are iffy, mostly the Heather girl when her friends get killed and she's not really phased by it this movie might've improved if we had more on her character. Given the circumstances of the story however, while the rest is very flawed, I still think it works to its credit and definitely makes me root for Leatherface. What they did with Leatherface was BRILLIANT! He's more human which makes him more complex in a horrific way but it's not really played for the sake of him being a "good guy" (y'know, like how they fucked that up with Pyramidhead in SH:R? Or Nemesis in RE:A?) to the script's credit it DOES make sense, and toward the end of the movie Leatherface and Heather when aware they're cousins Leatherface is still menacing.
I realloy love the ending to this movie as well as the secret ending if anyone stayed for the credits? It was a nice funny little touch. Speaking of little touches, the scene in the amusement park (yeah, I know, I agree it was a missed opportunity there too) where Leatherface meets that guy dressed up as one of the abductors from the SAW movies I would've loved to see him saw that guy in half as a way of saying "Fuck you, Saw! Leatherface's taking over the Lionsgate throne now, mothafucka!"...but even so it was a funny little touch.
Is this a great movie? No, absolutely not, it has a lot of problems. But is it a bad movie? No, it's not a bad movie that much, it never bored me and didn't really insult my intellegence that much aside from a few flaws in the script or lack there of character depth or for even MORE lack of the GORE being in the movie, but overall it's a DECENT sequel.
I hope they make more sequels but can learn of the errors in this one and realize there needs to be less CGI, more blood and gore, more victims, more characters and stories to follow to give more interest or to even be scary. There IS room here to improve and hopefully they can all do that. Here's to hoping Leatherface gets another chance at his own franchise.
