For this type of film the characters aren't that bad. One dimensional but not overly annoying.

Agreed. One dimensional like in most slashers but that's to be expected of the sub-genre. They weren't obnoxiously annoying like most teenage stereotypes we are used to seeing in this kind of horror.

She read up that her entire family, including her mother were murdered by the town, including her adopted father and then the town turned on her so why wouldn't she join Leartherface.

Exactly. That would be enough to turn anybody psycho and want to take sides with their only remaining relative. It's also emphasized upon before that it runs in the blood.

This film is the Halloween H20 of the TCM franchise.

It does a really good job of ignoring the crappier entries and picks up the story from the original rather deftly. I like the opening sequence and thought it blended in really well. It's a satisfying film with suitable gore, OK characters and I actually jumped here and there when Leatherface came charging out of the darkness.

There are plenty of flaws, like Heather hiding in the open coffin and some dodgy lines that are unintentionally funny but for a new film in a long running franchise it's a perfect beer and pizza movie for a dull Friday night.

Yeah it was supposed to be up last Friday but now it will be published tomorrow. I realized I wanted to talk a lot more about horror franchises in general and now it's a feature piece rather than just a straight forward critique of the film.

I was annoyed that they wimped out in getting her to get her boobs out. In the climax her shirt was undone and she had no bra on, yet they manged to keep her breasts covered up with the shirt... teasingly frustrating.

The timeline didn't work for me. We all know the original is set in the 70's so why not just set this film in the 90's.

I think the producers were obsessed with making this a modern TCM film (considering the previous PD films were set in the 60's & 70's) and figured the general audience wouldn't really notice. That explains why they avoided mentioning the year the opening sequences took place (it's always August 19th and never August 19th 1973).

I think it was a dumb decision but whatever.

The thing is is that this film was made for the fans of the franchise. The filmmakers didn't hold back on the gore but they didn't have the balls to go all out with the T & A.

It doesn't really make much sense. Tits are a staple of the genre, in particular, slashers.

I was high when I saw the original but I don't remember there being any boobs in it. I remember specifically there wasn't really much gore in it, not like I'd grown up being led to believe by others. Like Halloween, the franchise gets more and more distorted the further you get from the original and attempts to be "true to the franchise" end up being failed attempts to be true to a version that never existed.

That said, pretty as this girl is she gets work for two reasons besides her face and she should stick to TV if all she's going to do is cock tease in an R-rated horror film.

True. However, the original TCM is a forerunner to the slasher and is one of the sub-genre's main template innovators. T & A did not become part of the essential elements of this kind of horror filmmaking until PJ Soles got her boobs out in the original 'Halloween'. The slasher then became a full package with the original 'Friday the 13th' giving birth to the golden age of the sub-genre by going all the way with its murder set-pieces with graphic gruesome depictions of the victims' demise. Therefore, the latest TCM film is part of the post-golden age era, a franchise that was specifically resurrected in 1986 with TCM 2 as as part of this golden age.

Wasn't disregarding your analysis nor do I disagree with you. Just imagining a guy in a full suit, top hat, large mustache, and with or without a monocle saying "Boobs that's brilliant! Lets do that in our movie!" just a very funny image.

Honestly now I'm thinking tracking through slasher movies to track the full progression of nudity maybe and interesting project.
