Back-to-back Independence Day sequels in the works

The finishing touches are being put on the scripts for planned back-to-back sequels for Independence Day.

Little is known about the two ID sequels, other than that they will tell a single story, but will be engineered more in the Back to the Future Parts 2 and 3 sequential-but-not-imperative model than like the last two Harry Potters, which was essentially one movie split in two. As our insider puts it, “They’re intended to be fulfilling movies onto themselves — you could see each separately and enjoy them — but they tell one big story.”

At the moment FOX is just waiting on the script and whether Will Smith will return or not is still up in the air. Apparently FOX tried to put a deal together a couple years ago and approached the star, who was asking for a hefty 50-million to shoot both films. Obviously that was too large of a figure for the studio, so FOX is willing to move forward without him if he's still asking for a similar amount.

At the time the film came out I was pretty young and considered it to be one of my fav. films. Of course, now that I'm older I see all its faults and incredible cheese. I'm open to the idea of sequels, but I could honestly care less if Smith returns or not. I didn't really like him in the first movie anyway

blegh...ID sucks, I remember seeing it in theaters thinking the effects and aliens were cool...then after th 3rd or 4th viewing thinking it sucks ass and that I hate most of the characters (Jeff Goldblum aside)

Axactly what I was thinking when I started watching it the other night. had to turn it off.

A sequel to ID might be interesting. I liked the first one, yeah it's kind of cheesy and stupid in parts but I still consider it a good popcorn movie.

It's Hollywood, if they're not remaking every film already made (especially foreign films), they making unnecessary remakes. All for money.

I read this earlier as well. The only reason this is moving forward is because of the positive buzz around White House Down, the trailer of which is supposed to debut today.

Emmerich spoke a bit more about the possible storylines for the sequels, saying:

"The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically grown technology, but we know how to take an anti-gravity device and put it in a human airplane. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens]."
