Where do you draw the line?

So, I was watching a horror movie countdown on TV today, and personally it was hit or miss to me. I thought Hard Candy shouldn't be on it, even for a "psychological thriller", which I don't consider it to be...anyway...

It got me to thinking about where I draw the line to movies that I will or will not watch.

My usual guide-line is if it's a movie that was made from the early 2000's to now, and the synopsis begins with "A group of teenagers/friends/young adults/whores..." I put it right back down.

The movie that I kind of want to watch, but don't want to watch because of this reasoning is "The Descent", because you know, no matter the profession, it's so common for a group of sexy young women to go deep-cave exploring wearing only breezy little tank tops. Because obviously if they know so much about cave exploring, they know it's just so safe to not wear protective clothing in an unfamiliar, dangerous environment.

I also usually avoid any movies involving clowns or dolls....

So, where do you draw the line?

I draw the line with "killer children flix" like Children of the Corn, a franchise I personally believe to suck in a major league way and also "killer doll" flix like Child's Play.

(although I did like the Zuni doll in Trilogy of Terror)

I don't normally watch straight-to-DVD horror (unless I know it's somewhat good before hand) and I especially avoid indie films since most are crap. I don't watch stuff before 1970, though, there were some exceptions. I'm cool with everything else

'The Descent' is pretty decent. As for 'Child's Play', you just watch the first one CoolMike...fucking awesome

The cool teens etc slasher flix from the mid 90s to now make me want to cut up people like this so don't watch. Usualy don't watch a lot of the currant remakes as well. Plus some of the paranormal and exorcism movies out in the past few years.

To be 100% honest, if it has a Bloody-disgusting quote on it, I tend to avoid.

I'll watch pretty much anything. Although I tend to avoid anything I feel is more of a Fetish film, such as certain vomit based fare. Otherwise I'll give just about anything a fair shot.

Avoiding The Descent is avoiding a hell of a good film. You really should reconsider it.

I will avoid After Dark films. Straight to DVD. Movies that people say are "Soooo scary. Teh coolest!". Most movies from the 21st century that show in cinemas. Movies by specific terrible directors.

I like to draw the line at After Dark films, with the exception of The Final. That one got my attention. And the killer doll movies, they try to hard to be scary and just come out as comedy.

anything with 5 teens on the cover, after scream this was the cover for a ton of crappy slasher films....
anything just trying to be shocking like human centipede, or gore for gores sake, doesn't do anything for me.

i'll give most things a try but modern horror sucks balls.
most indie flms are crap because they are a cheap way to break into film and usually just crap people making them...

I give pretty much everything a shot........every once in a great moon you come across a gem, but the chances are greater that its a POS. I will also take recommendations from some people .

Anything recommended by Bloody Disgusting has proven to be POS.

I typically don't draw the line anywhere when it comes to horror movies. The only movie that actually made me question that philosophy was A Serbian Film. That was by far the most brutal and fucked up movie I've ever seen. The reason I almost drew the line at A Serbian Film was because of some of the subjects involved, specifically pedophilia. The scene involving the newborn was particularly troubling for me. The infant was obviously fake, but what was taking place still crossed a line that nobody should cross, ever. The American Blu-Ray release, thankfully, dials it back a bit, where it's more implied than shown. I do have to commend the filmmakers for having the balls to go as far as they did. Having watched A Serbian Film a second time, the more brutal scenes come off as more over-the-top, but they're still unsettling. I draw the line at pedophilia being shown in movies. That's not something anyone should see. I understand what the filmmakers were going for, but I don't really think showing an infant getting raped is needed to get the point across. That is where I draw the line.

Killer children can be a little odd. I liked Children of the Corn, but I wasn't a huge fan of all the remakes they did. The killer-doll works for me, because i'm terrified of dolls. It's a niche market though, as those who arent, will just see it as silly, as you said.

I agree that MOST straight-to-DVD horror is a load of shit, but some indie films are pretty decent. The main problem with them however, is major companies scoop them up, rip them apart, and tie them back together with teenage whores.

Remakes are usually awful. Most things with a bunch of teens on the cover are bad as well. The paranormal ones are ok, but it’s best if they’re Asian horror ^_^

I find most After Dark films to be pretty lame…I’ve been pretty lucky with Tartan Asia Extreme for the most part…not always…

I have yet to see this film, and I’m questioning now if I even want to. I’m all for gore, if it’s done well, but I totally agree that some things should just not be touched. Pedophilia is something that nobody needs to see. Yes we all know it’s horrific, but it’s just too much, even for an “extreme gore” movie. If I hear mention of anything of the sort, I write it off.

Rape scenes kind of get to me as well. Not only because I’m a woman, but the one in Ichi the Killer was so real it was disturbing…
