Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

To be released on the 11th. As a huge fan of open-ended RPGs, this is my most anticipated game release of the year. Will be interesting to see what gameplay mechanics have been changed from Morrowind/Oblivion and how much of the winning 'Fallout' formula they incorporated into the game. Also the dungeons are supposedly more varied than the repetitive ones Oblivion offered so it'll be fun to just head out, jump right in and kill shit right out of the box.

Some thoughts on the PC version after playing it a good part of the day:

- The menus and general user interface aren't very good. Equipping and using items are a clunky pain in the ass, mainly because it's a port of the 360 version and it's set up to work better with a controller. Really wished the developers would have taken the time to give the PC version it's own interface.

- The game runs pretty damn good on my laptop on mediumish - highish settings, which is relatively new and decent but far from a gaming powerhouse. Seems more optimized than what Oblivion was when it was released.

- Lot's more customization this time around in terms of crafting weapons, upgrading armor, enchanting, alchemy, etc...and I'm liking the new perk leveling system so far.

- The graphics are far from next-gen. It actually looks and feels similar to Oblivion, but better. However, the sheer amount of painstaking detail and level design that went into the world somewhat makes up for the questionable animations and lower-res textures.

- Dungeons do seem a lot larger and more varied than in previous games.

- Although I haven't reached that point, apparently the game features something I've been wanting to see for a long time, and that's infinite quests. Apparently factions such as the Dark Brotherhood/Thieves Guild will give you infinite, randomly generated assassination/stealing missions once you're done with the main quest line. How cool is that?


All in all, I'm giving the game a 9/10 at this point. The major issue with me is the godawful UI which I hope is improved upon by modders in the coming week. Bottom line though is that you will not see a better exploring, questing, looting and killing experience in the foreseeable future.

No offense, but I don't get the greatness of console RPG's. It says there are 300+ hours of gaming..MMO's have been out for years, that you can play on the shittiest computers, that have an unlimited amount of hours and story

MMO's require you to play with others, which I don't like in an RPG. Takes you out of the game so much, and MMO stories are luckluster at best.

Outside of Call of Duty fans, who wants to play the same game for years? MMORPGS also require a monthly fee and become extremely boring, repetitive grindfests after a certain point. Player versus player is rarely (if ever) balanced.

Good points..never thought about the people who are lone wolve's. Do you need to play the previous games in order to get this story?

Not really. Even though the games take place in the same world, each game takes place in a different realm and has an independent story.

For some reason I can't seem to use the slider to customize my character

There's an option somewhere in settings to disable 360 controller. I had to disable it to get my menus/UI working right. Might wanna try that.

Good game, but almost overwhelmed in a way with all the possibilities and options available. I'm barely almost level 3 and I got my ass handed to me earlier after stumbling onto some hidden pit. Found myself against some tough opponents and couldn't get out of the cave system without fighting them so I had to revert to a previous save

Anyway, what race/level are you guys?

Agreed. I'm in at like 15+ hours so far and barely made a dent in the game.

I can't imagine how it will effect me when I can finally get my hands on it. When I got Fallout: New Vegas I played 18 hours straight the first time I popped it in.
