    At the Mountains of Madness

I have rarely been as excited as I was when I heard Del Toro was adapting this story into a film. My favorite H.P. story of all time. And after "Pans Labyrinth", how could he go wrong? He seemed so passionate, so dedicated to this project. Hearing that Tom Cruise was considered for the lead role (whatever you may think of him, he would have lent big name credence to the film) also intrigued me. Now that the project has died, my heart is broken. While some of the films adapted from his stories have been fun (Re-animator), none have been entirely faithful. And I thought that Toro would have brought that into this film.
Is anyone out there as disappointed as me?

When I heard Del Toro was doing this I was excited, I'm a big fan of his. This is the first I'm hearing of it that they are no longer doing it, that is disappointing.

What is awesome? That Del Toro started this project? Or that it has fallen apart, maybe to never rise again?

Most of the H. P. adaptations fail miserably. Sure you have Ressurected, From Beyond, Re-Animator, Unnamable and In the Mouth of Madness which are the most successful of the bunch, but to be entirely faithful is pretty much impossible even someone of Del Toro's talents. Of course awhile back I always wanted the Lord of the Rings trilogy as live action instead of the animation it was back then because the CGI wasn't up to par for that kind of a film. Wait around for a little bit, and see what happened?

Actually I just found this on ebay, but I've been burned by a couple sellers lately, so I'm not in all that trusting a mood. It looks like a bootleg or perhaps a greek import. Again I 'm not trusting the seller either way.

Sounds like a Greek import to me. It's hard to tell since I don't have any in my collection and they don't seem to be eye-catching to collectors. Don't know if they're known for bootleging, but the Russians and Chinese are. This is what strt has:

I too thought that Del Toro and Lovecraft would be a good match. Toro's talent and dedication, coupled with Lovecraft's vision, might have made something worth watching.

I don't understand people's hatred of Cruise. "The Last Samurai" and "Collateral" were pretty awesome films. And how can anyone watch Cruise in "Tropic Thunder", with his beer gut and bald head, not laugh your ass off? I know he gets labeled as stuck up and elitist, but he must have some amount of self-deprecation to have pulled off that role. And if that humility does not exist, then that just proves how talented an actor he really is.

I know where you are coming from, but I don't think lack of technology or reliance on CGI is the problem here. It has more to do with Hollywood, and how that entity decides for the rest of us what makes a successful film.
Del Toro could make this on his own, low budget, but it sounds like he WANTS to do it right, and I imagine accurately producing Lovecraft's vision will not be cheap. Hollywood is reluctant to invest it's resources into projects that stray to far from the accepted guidelines. Love, heroism, redemption, sacrifice, growth, greed, hate. Good guys, helpless women, and happy endings.

"ATMOM" does not deal with any of those. At least the book doesn't, and for the sake of this post, I'm going to assume that Del Toro was going to hold true to the original.
It's a story about a lone man, looking for answers, lost and alone in the frozen expanse of Antarctica. There is no love interest, no heroic quest, no happy ending. This is an incredible story, but ultimately not very attractive to Hollywood.
I've seen Del Toro talk about this project. This is something he has dreamt of since he was a kid. He said that one of the biggest benefits of "making it big" was gaining the notoriety and resources to start his own projects. He had this on the back burner for years, waiting for circumstances to allow him to kick it into gear. And once the ball started rolling, he devoted himself to it entirely, even bowing out of directing the new Hobbit movies to work on his dream. You know what that tells me? He put his art and his passion above his wallet.

I've always loved this story, and never even considered the possibility of seeing it up on the big screen. To come so close, so very close, and have some unimaginative money men snatch it away. It broke my heart, just a little.

I didn't judge Cruise because he was "stuck up" I said he was a shitty actor...which I really think he is. He has very little acting talent compared to the bank that he makes. Last Samurai blew ass, I couldn't even make it through it ,and to credit his performance in Tropic Thunder is just odd (though I will admit that is the biggest stretch of a role he's ever done) Tom Cruise does not come off as a believable human being in any of his roles.

    Last Samurai blew ass
I've met a few people who didn't care one way or the other about "Samurai", but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that it "blew ass". I look forward to our future conversations.

I know you never claimed Cruise was stuck up. You stated that you thought he was a terrible actor. You don't like the way he performs his job. I can respect that. I was trying to point out that some people do the opposite. They don't like the person, and that influences their judgement of that persons acting ability.
I would equate it to saying Kobe Bryant isn't a good basketball player just because he's done some slime ball shit in his personal life.
I personally try to remain as open and non judgmental as possible. I believe you can dislike the performance, and still appreciate the effort. I don't know if that makes sense, but I don't know how else to describe it.

Tom Cruise is a whiny little bitch. The only film I liked him in was Rain Man because he suited the role of a narcissistic Ferrari salesman to a fucking tee.
It was the role he was born to play. He's got zero range, even in Born On The Fourth Of July I still thought he was an uppity cunt.
He's one of a tiny select of actors I actually go out of my way to avoid, I also can't stand Will Smith. There's just something about those two that turns me off.
Neither have ever imbued a character with any real depth, just stares and expressions.
I'm amazed Cruise has become this Hollywood cash-in type who can command tens of millions per movie.
He's a one trick pony, grin and then act all important sums up his entire oeuvre.

You know At the Mountains of Madness isn't necessarily off the table yet. Del Toro is still shopping it around to different studios, well when he has the time at least with how much he has on his plate right now.
