It's really a shame to see this get mixed reviews; Peter Jackson is a man that puts so much effort into his work.

It's still getting very good reviews in general, all of the mixed reviews seem to say the same thing, it's too long.

Just got back from seeing this in HFR 3D, the mixed reviews are crazy, the movie was simply put excellent and I really dug the high frame rate as well.

It was as PJ intended it to be viewed and it really worked for me. I was immersed from start to finish and it was just the escape into fantasy that I needed today.

It does take awhile to get rolling, but I didn't mind as I was entertained and captivated by the visuals. I'd say it has much more action than the first installment of LotR.

I wasn't too enthusiastic at first, but if it's true what some are saying, that it is more like The Fellowship of the Ring than TTT or ROTK, then I think I will like it. So long as they focus on Bilbo for most of the film.. because all of the cgi battle scenes really bored me. It's the same with the books, I'm more interested in the hobbits and their journey. The Fellowship of the Ring is full of that which is why I like it. Once they split up, though, the story jumps back and forth between minor characters I don't really care about. Like Aragorn, for example, I don't really give a shit about.

Just because someone puts a lot of work into something doesn't mean it's going to be good. I'm not saying this is shit, but saying in general.

Look at the Transformers movies. They had huge amounts of work, and breakthroughs in technology effects wise, and they are turds.

You'll probably like this then, definitely has much more of a fellowship vibe. The guy that plays Bilbo does an excellent job, he's so much more likable than Frodo was.

I just got back from this and it was fantastic. Ignore the bad reviews as anything Peter Jackson will make after the LOTR trilogy will be scrutinized. It is and always will be his greatest achievement as a filmmaker and his Achilles’ heel. No matter what he does cynical mainstream film critics will be there to pounce on him just for the sake of it and fail at their professions for telling it how it is. Admittedly, I didn't love 'King Kong' but I enjoyed it. 'The Lovely Bones' while not great it's underrated and deserves a bit more appreciation as it has its beautiful emotional poignant moments. Anyway, I will not go into too much detail as so to avoid spoilers but all I will say is that you will not be disappointed if you love the LOTR trilogy. While not perfect, it's ultimately satisfying. It's not as strong as TTT and TROTK but I would have it on a par with TFOTR. That's taking nothing away from it as the whole LOTR trilogy is some of the most magnificent epic filmmaking ever overall.

This is how I've got it -

    TTT
    TROTK
    TFOTR & AUJ

I think a lot of disappointment is coming from people who were expecting a story that is the same as LOTR. The Hobbit is completely different as it's a childrens story whereas Rings was aimed at adults. The tone of The Hobbit is way more kid friendly.

I had a blast with this. The guy who played Bilbo was really damn good. Also, Thorin Oakensheild is a freaking badass. I really liked that every Dwarfe felt like it belonged, some of them from the previews (that huge one in particuler) seemed like they'd be their for comedy, every dwarfe had a moment to shine.
    Spoiler...
Also, I freaking loved the scene with Bilbo invisible and had Sting up to Golem's throat, it was the most emotional and dramatic scene in the movie, and one of the most memorable scenes in the entire series.

I will say this though, it did feel like thy where padding it out, in particuler the opening of the film did seem a little too long. Still, it was fun to watch from begenning to end.

I give it an 8 out of 10.

Everyone keeps saying this, and I don't see it. It's a simpler story, but the filmed version isn't more kid friendly. There's a lot more humor, but there's still plenty of decapitations, disembowelment and impaling.

The scenes with the Goblins/trolls and Gollum were great, and on a whole the film is a lot of fun. But there is a lot of filler, like scenes of Ian Holm and Elijah Wood wandering around the house for 30 minutes. That's just fan service and wasn't needed to kick off the story.

Of course not, and I didn't mean to say that. I just meant to say that it's disappointing because Peter Jackson works so hard at what he does, and it didn't turn out quite as well as maybe he might have imagined.

I saw this last night and it was amazing! After almost 3 hours at the theater, I was already dying to sit through another 3 to watch the next film in the trilogy. If you're even a slight fan of the Lord of the Rings, go see this now!
