I was going through my laserdisc collection yesterday.

A couple weeks ago my wife has a free code for Redbox so we went. You know there is something wrong with the movie rental business when there is a line on a street corner in cold December for a Redbox.

Nope. I love these things. I was watching the Evil Dead 2 sp ed Red disc the other day. The gem of my collection is the Elite Dir cut of Dawn of the Dead that I had signed by the entire main cast, Savini and Romero. I also love the gate fold editions like Nightmare on Elm Street, Re-Animator and Make Them Die Slowly.

The nice thing about laserdiscs is that when you bought one, it felt like you were buying something special. The ultimate version of a movie. Something that dvds have never matched in my opinion.

Downloading has basically just saved me a lot of wasted money... I got really sick of blind-buying flicks and having them be complete garbage. I have bookshelves of horror movies that I bought, watched once, and will never watch again.. While it is impressive to look at, ultimately it was money wasted. I mean what's the point of having a collection, if 80% of the collection is shit?

I could sit here and say that if I watch a movie and like it, I always go right out an buy it.. but I'd be lying. Sometimes I do, but other times.. fuck it... I consider it even trade for all the shitty movies that I wasted my money on in the past. If this all makes me a dirty thieving pirate, then all I can say is this:

Personally I am considering sell a large percentage of my DVDs simply because I don't want to watch them anymore, and some of these are considered cult classics. They just sit there and sit there and I just regret buying them now. I would sell them and use the money and buy stuff I really want.

When I was a young pup, the first video rental around where I lived was a Laser Disc rental... I can still remember the first movies my folks rented: Psycho 2, Zombie, First Blood, Spring Break and Porky's.
