    Cameras.

What is a good camera to start of with in making my first short film?

Would I be doing alright with a digital camera at first or better of working on technical aspects of the film such as script and effects then save for a better camera?

A young friend of my dad's makes TV adds and videos for businesses I just remembered. So I will chat with him about this as he can get me good deals on cameras.

Please just one thing: word HARD on your script buddy!

Directing a short movie is one of my aims in life and I hope I will end up directing one sooner or later...

I totally agree with you 100%. I am in no rush apart from getting it done this year. I will work on the script, find a course and do it just to develop some skills, then I will buy the camera and shoot it.

I refuse to rush into it and create a turkey. Also I want to create what I, and hopefully like minded people, will enjoy repeated watches off. certainly not doing this to please the general public.

My advice (not sure it's useful...): be conscious of your influences, look for your "style", create a story board, maybe look for opinions (but be sure these will come from people who won't be afrad of being harsh towards your works).

A camera is a tool and only as good as the person using it. Doesn't matter if you're shooting with a cellphone or arriflex. If you know how to fill a frame and shoot for the edit, You can work with any camera. Get out there and practice.

Whatever you end up shooting with find a way for it to fit the story. I know of a guy that wanted to make a film about old family roadtrips. Only had a vhs camcorder so he set in the 80s and made it look like a old home movie.

And remember there's no magic look good button on a camera, even if you end up shooting with a red one or 7D. You have to have solid lighting, art direction, blocking, framing. Camera is just a box that captures it all.

If you haven't shot anything yet at this point. Don't worry too much about the script and special effects. Come up with something simple and make it for practice. Lighting and composition is very important. You might want to make a couple 5 min shorts before you go for the actual short film you want to do.
Most importantly, have a great time making it!
As for cameras I do not think HD is important when it comes to indie stuff. A 1 ccd camera will do for now, but if you are serious and want to turn movie making into something serious you should invest in a 3 ccd camera. I use a Panasonic DVC100b camera. Most 3ccd cameras have come way down in price since their HD replacements have come out.

Something that's fairly inexpensive but high quality, with room to grow, would be picking up a Canon Rebel, T2i or T3i, which will get you thinking about your shots from a more photographic perspective than from a video engineering perspective. There's a lot of enthusiast support for these and similar DSLRs plus you can "future proof" a lot of accessory purchases so that if this ends up being something you stick with you're not starting from scratch on everything with future camera (dslr) purchases.

Camcorders are now pretty much for old people and soccer moms and poor investments.

I ended up buying a basic camera. I decided pretty much what you mention here, create some 5 min films of different things and just enjoy myself while learning.

Now that you have a camera make very brief shorts to experiment like morbid said.
Make sure you start practicing shooting for the edit. That means clean ins and outs with your talent. Look up info on the 180° rule, so things cut together cleanly without distracting the viewers eye. Then look up how you can cheat the 180 rule in case you're in a jam where you need to shoot 2 over the shoulders against the same wall or something similar.

Use the rule of thirds, an audiences eyes are going to draw right to blank spaces.

Your final image will be 2-d but remember you have a 3-d space to play with. A lot of first time filmmakers push all the action flat up against a wall. Pan along the x,y axis. Look into getting a wheelchair for dolly shots. Use foreground elements. Block actors far apart one in foreground one in background. It will look unnatural to the eye but can look good on camera.

    Good luck
