Special Effects Web Sites and Tools.

What are the special effects websites out there that teach basic skills. Or even books or other source material.

For my first short I am having a shot of a forearm with a deep cut down the length of it as if somebody cut their wrist 'properly'.

I know I can Google it obviously but started this thread so that we could pool together .www's for future references for people to save them, and me, time.

Indiemogul's youtube channel has a lot of neat tutorials for doing practical FX as well as doing things in After FX.

I can't remember if it was on indie mogul (can't find it now) but I remember finding a cool video that taught you how to make your own Guacamole gun, which is basically an air compressor to splatter people with gore. Everything was bought in the plumbing section of Lowes, and mounted to a 2 liter bottle. Expoxy a pvc pipe to the bottle, epoxy that to a valve joint. Pump the bottle with air and seal the valve. Load a pvc pipe full of goo, aim, twist the valve and boom.


I did a short film about 3 years ago that featured a lot of guns and that came in handy.

We were trying to go for laughs, so some of the gore was meant to look intentionally lame(like troma). Like this decapitation. We basically took the the idea of the swedish chef from the muppets, and had two people operate the hands of dummy body and another operate a hudson sprayer that shot out ribbons of gore.



Definitely start with Indiemogul's youtube channel and then check out the fan submitted videos to find more info on doing FX.

I agree with Chotop...great channel...also if you search youtube with "how to's" for special effects you'll find there are alot of good channels and they all tend to have a good amount of how to vids...

wish ya luck buddy...I just experimented myself trying things out...though it can get a lil pricey with the dragon skin and gels..that shit adds up....
