    Horror for 2012.

This appears it will be a very sorry year for horror. Especially for mainstream fair, all I can see pretty much are remakes of cult 80s movies.

The only thing I am excited about are some releases of movies on DVD, the new movie coming out from Morbid Vision Films and 'Promethius'.

Ones I'm kinda lookin' forward to: The Grey, Cabin in the Woods, [Rec] 3, Prometheus, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Chronicle and The Woman in Black I'm a bit curious about, but I'm not specifically looking forward to them.

I guess there may be a few surprises as we go through the year. I guess not everything is highly advertised or what have you. But still in all honesty don't hold much hopes.

There really hasn't been much to look forward to as far as horror goes for years anyway, so this isn't anything new

I liked the trailer so that one is on my list.

Funny thing is that The Thing (2011) will be in my country next month so that that one is on my list also wierd huh.

Agree with FrighT; there hasn't been anything to look forward to for years. I'd say at least the past decade ( conservatively speaking ) hasn't given the horror fan what it's been screaming for. Horror fans have been made to accept what the studios are pumping out ; because that's all there is readily available. The underground and indepenent film makers are no different ; of course they have more legitimate reasons such as financial backing , and thier fan bases to support them are minimal at best. So that pretty much limits the independent / underground film maker as to thier productions / projects.

    You are right.

I think horror movies nowadays are all about the scares and nothing about the story, they only look for an original premise and some scare scenes and that's it. A movie needs a story, regardless the genre, with depth and good character. A story where they explore fear in a profound way, where we have something to talk about not just to jump about.

Looking forward to Rec 3, Prometheus and World War Z, but, there are two films that are driving me crazy. They were both announced years ago but there doesn't seem to be any progress on Ruggero Deodato's l o n g awaited Cannibals and wtf is goung on with Humpty Dumpty 3D???
Also, I don't know if these are due this year but I can't wait for Evil Dead 4 & the Childs Play remake.

Forgot about WWZ, gotta add that one to my list as well.

Not sure what's happening with Humpty, but Evil Dead 4 aint even happening and Childs Play hasn't really moved anywhere, so neither of those are coming out anytime soon.

Prometheus does look good. Outside of that, the only horror I can see worth waiting for is the return of The Walking Dead and American Horror Story on TV. That's a sad statement. But it's been that way for a while now. Sad but true.

Gonna go off topic here but I see a lot of people whinging about modern horror being in a rut. It's bollocks, horror is a timeless genre that will continue to produce great films regardless of the status quo. Sure, horror has its ebbs and it has its flows but you can bet your sweet arse that people have been decrying horror forever.
Rest assured that in the late sixties the peepz were moaning about horror becoming too sanguinary, then, as the free-for-all seventies films arrived I imagine dullards accusing the genre of attention grabbing antics ala Blood Sucking Freaks. The early eighties would have angered the moaning minnies with accusations of unoriginal slashing output and the mid eighties would have got the goat of the negative nellies by giving them the ammo to attack the trend as nothing more than tired slasher parodies.
The nineties gave us some excellent horror films but the naysayers will continue to bitch and moan indefinitely. The noughties have seen some brilliant films so the moral of the story is stop fucking bemoaning a timeless genre that will forever produce gems.
There, I've had my rant now.

Thanks for that decade by decade breakdown.

    Anyway, mainstream horror is dead.

horror isn't completely dead. It just goes thru an identity crisis for awhile after it goes thru a success. Something will bring it back, then the inevitable slump and so on. History repeats itsself in Hollywood.

I'm looking forward to Prometheus as are most. I dont know jack shit about cabin in the woods but its still got my interest. Dark Shadows is something im really waiting on. The Woman In Black looks pretty creepy, and I love me some creepy atmosphere. I myself and looking forward to Lords of Salem cuz its Robs first original script since HO1C. I mean Halloween 2 sorta was but it was a known character (and it sucked). Piranha 3DD will be a fun lil flick I believe. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter has me giddy with anticipation. Knights of Badassdom I think will be great. Warm Bodies sounds pretty interesting. And Theres some cool animated movies coming out with Paranorman and also Frankenweenie which I think comes out this year.

If there's one man who can do sci-fi horror, it's Ridley Scott. I can't wait for Prometheus, but yeah, it's hard to think of any other horror movies coming out that I'm looking forward to. Definitely want to see The Grey, and it's survival horror I guess, but I still don't really think of it as a horror movie (more like man vs. nature). I really want to see Chronicle and The Cabin in the Woods. Piranha 3DD does look like fun.
