Movie was pretty fun. Think I had more fun with it than the first. Lots of ridiculousness and surprisingly funny sequences. Loved the gore and all the sci-fi aspects. 7/10 Bring on a third

I haven't seen it yet but I'm willing to bet it's not CGI blood/gore, it's practical effects digitally composited (like the first Machete). If not Action-Essentials then the equivalent. You can't do that and have it look good.
Still, what I could see in trailer, everything was done purposely to look shitty and cheesy. I've been trying to figure out what the deal is with Troublemaker Digital. They've demonstrated that they can do good looking work (Sin City, Planet Terror) but lots of bad looking stuff (everything else). They seem almost like a tax shelter for Rodriguez given they're not even the main house working on his last several films.

I started watching it last night but fell asleep. Similar composited practical blood elements like the first one with a lot more 2D "cut-out" style body violence. Really, really bad effects though purposely so. I think they really needed to go the Planet Terror route where they might be goofy looking but were at least well executed. I'll try to finish watching it tonight. I'm disappointed that their deteriorated, "grind house" finish isn't maintained as convincingly throughout, like it was in Planet Terror and, to a lesser extent, the first Machete. It feels overall much cheaper thru-and-thru than the first film, and likely was.
On the plus side, I didn't expect the serious subtext regarding US/Mexico relations over the cartels. It's hidden under the cartoon exterior. These aren't just tropes used here. Even more than serious fair like AMC's The Bridge (or even Breaking Bad) we have a theme that highlights a threat and organization far worse than any militant jihadist threat to the US. Continuing to treat the cartels like a civil, criminal issue is a travesty of epic proportions. It doesn't matter to our government that it's happening right next door because it's mostly brown-on-brown slaughter and wholesale corruption without any major world finance interests involved. If there was oil or diamonds or some other resource besides exploited labor maybe things would be different.
The first film made immigration commentary which is also very real but from the previews I was expecting this one to be just the cartoon. Mind you, it's mostly cartoon but, still, I was surprised.
