    The Evil Dead Remake

Just wanted to keep everyone up to speed with the upcoming remake to Evil Dead. Currently word is that filming is aimed to begin March 2012 in New Zealand, with Federico Alvarez making his feature film directorial debut.

Right now Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl and Red Riding Hood) and Jane Levy (Suburgatory, Shameless) are the only confirmed cast members, but Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker, The Chumscrubber, Carriers) is in talks.

Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are producing. There's a rumor that Bruce may have a brief cameo in it at one point. There will no "Ash" character this time 'round and it's said that this will be "very dark" and "scary." We can also expect to see a return of the "evil trees".

Anyway, you can read TONS more info on the project at UHM's page for it: http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/movie/evil-dead

I'm more curious than anything about this remake. I know it obviously won't top the original, but I'd like to see how today's modern effects translate into this age-old story. Hopefully they don't overuse the CG.

If Raimi and Campbell are producing, then this might be worth watching after all. I really wouldn't bother if they weren't involved. After seeing Drag Me to Hell I'm not too sure that Raimi knows what to do with effects anymore.

I thought Drag Me to Hell was a nice film (better than the Spiderman movies anyway). But I'm with Splat on this one. Bruce Campbell as Ash carried the Evil Dead series. I think more fans would want to see a sequel with him rather than a remake without the Ash character at all.

I'll pass on this. The insanity, morbid-slapstick and even the delicious gore with creative-looking demons is what makes the original trilogy so fantastic and believe it or not it's actually SCARY. It builds with great suspense and it has great stop-motion effects which made it awesome.

CG won't complete any of these things at all because they have no charm or feeling in them, I don't give a shit if they're on a tight schedule, this has to be about the art of filmmaking not making easy money for cum-guzzling pigs known as H-wood to keep raping my fucking childhood...I hate you Sam Raimi.

Agreed but i'll wait for some previews before I 100% rule out seeing it.

I'm not a remake hater, but this just seems like a stupid idea to me. I get people saying their shouldn't be a replacement Ash. I do. But without Ash the Evil Dead movies would be ok but not amazing. Ash is what really made those movies. And I think thats one reason the character has stood the test of time, other than the obvious fact he's funny. Because how many times can you say the human character is what made the movie so good in our lil genre. Not a lot (not movies like Evil Dead anyway). And I know the original Evil Dead wasn't a comedy but Evil Dead is known for its funny moments. Evil Dead 1 will always be remembered yeah, but it isn't as talked about as much as Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are.

Without Ash and without the Comedy Evil Dead....well its not. It isn't Evil Dead. And this will not be. I'm glad Bruce campbell is producing but why can't he come back. He doesn't have to be written the same way. Bring him in as someone who shows up and saves the kids. Why write Ash out of the movie. Thats just stupid. And Sam Raimi hasn't made a good movie since spiderman 2 . I have no faith in him at all.

There's two reasons I can think of off the top of my head as to why Bruce Campbell wouldn't reprise his role as Ash. The first is Burn Notice. Bruce Campbell may be a hero in the eyes of many horror fans, but in the larger picture he's primarily a B-List movie star (I mean Christ, he only had cameo appearances in the Spiderman movies and Sam Raimi even made them!). I don't think he'd be so willing to take a chance on walking out on a hit show to star in another Evil Dead movie (as much as it pains me).

The second reason is that the role of Ash is obviously a very physically demanding one that requires a lot of stunts (unless they decide to change the character some). Bruce is getting up there in age, and while he's still as cool as ever, I don't think he'd be able to pull off the physical parts of the role anymore. And it's probably best that he doesn't try to pull an Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I can really dig the Jane Levy casting. I still can't figure out why the need to remake this, but if Bruce and Sam are producing...well, I can't argue with that.

I disagree. I think the essence of Evil Dead is terror, not comedy or Ash. Raimi took the series in a ridiculous direction, but the original film is horror, not horror comedy. And considering just the first movie, Ash isn't an integral ingredient to the formula. I'd like to see them make a scary movie, because there aren't many left nowadays.
