Here's my review if anyone's interested: http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/...evil-dead-2013
Though the review seemed mostly negative, it's ultimately still a fun watch, it just turned out to be a disappointing remake, namely because of all the positive buzz and hype it received.

My one complaint was that there was
No Ash. Not on the sencemof
The character, which I am glad they didn't try to have someone fill in those shoes. But there was no Ash, bad ass hero... The main guy and girl where meh at best. The blonde was non registering and the brunette was used for basically a Kill only. The guy with glasses was the closest thing to a hero.

well if you read what I said... it states I am glad no one attempted to step into the shoes of Ash, but they didn't try to create a memorable character of their own i.e a new hero, or someone to stick out. Like fright said, the only one who was likeable was the guy with glasses, but even he was far from a hero.

This is a problem with most current horror films, they give you nobody to root for. The Hills remake gave you this with Aaron Stanford. When he killed that big mutant in such a brutal fashion I remember the crowd in the theater applauding and going nuts. That was such a great scene but an outstanding moment because of the crowd's reaction.
Thinking further back you have Reggie in Phantasm 2 (he was in the others but he shined in this). I loved that character. The fight scene with him and the digger in the basement

There can never be a remake that is a 10/10 or even a 9/10. Just too much to compare to. We are all passionate with horror movies to know that and should be going into this movie with that in mind. I'm still trying to find time to go see it. 7/10 is my expectation

I went to see the film last night with the wife and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I'm a fan of the original films, but I went into this one assuming it had little to do with the original. I think that helped me a lot. By not expecting the same film, I was able to enjoy this as a completely new piece. I think Jane Levy produced one of the best crazed characters I've seen in a long time. The directing was solid, the effects were outstanding, the score was perfect, the tension was great. Sure, the script wasn't the best ever -- but I wasn't expecting it to be.
If you're looking for the original... just re-watch the original. If you're looking for a different take on the original, you'll enjoy this one.
By the way -- the film had my wife jumping left and right. She enjoys horror, but she's not as used to the genre as I -- so it really got to her.

I agree with you, I really enjoyed the movie. Felt like an old school blood bath that doesn't take itself to seriously. I've missed things like that. It went places towards the end I absolutely did not expect. I was pleasantly surprised by that. And Jane Levy did a wonderful job in this movie. She played a creepy possessed demon girl better than any I've seen in a long long time. I also think Lou Taylor Pucci will also stick out as a fan favorite in this flick.

I liked it until the last act, when it just seemed to fall apart. The brother was such a fucking idiot and I agree about the lack of character development. I was almost expecting the blonde to be like, "Yeah, I have less than ten lines, you guys handle this shit."

I was a little disappointed. First Prometheus, then The Hobbit, and now Evil Dead. I keep running into mediocre movies.

They pretty much gave the go-ahead for a sequel weeks before it was released in theaters anyway. They were that confident with it.

I thought the Evil Dead remake started out great, built up a strong, creepy mood that led into some shocking, scary scenes. But the gory scenes just went on so relentlessly that the movie, after a while, stopped being shocking and became tedious and tiring. Of course I'm not against gore in horror movies, but i think this one relied on it too heavily. Overall, average.
