Bay confirms return for Transformers 4 for 2014

To clarify uninformed reports coming out of Toy Fair - Steven Spielberg and I are working on a whole new re imagining of Transformers, the fourth installment. We have been working on the idea for a few months. I'm excited about where it's headed. But first I'm doing a small $20 million dollar edgy black comedy of a true crime story set in Miami called "Pain and Gain," staring Mark Wahlberg and Dwanye Johnson, and very close to signing on a couple other great actors. I'm extremely excited to simplify my film career this spring with a great character piece.


That starts filming at the end of March. I might then jump onto a very cool television show my company Platinum Dunes is selling to a major cable network. It might be my first pilot I might potentially direct. We are still working out the details of the deal.

Bit old news by about a week or so.

Read between the lines and Bay comes back to the franchise because Paramount finally gave him the go ahead to do 'Pain and Gain' after he gave them 3 truckloads of money along with Hasbro.

That said. The more news that circles about it. The more it sounds like a direct continuity sequel to DOTM only with the current human characters being removed and told through a different POV.

I suppose you could look at 3 ways...

1. If you like the Bayformer movies. You like this news
2. If you like the Bayformer movies but looked forward to a true reboot...your probably mixed on this
3. If you hate the Bayformer movies and just Bay in general...you probably look at this as a double whammy....not only does another movie come from Bay but its slated as a re imagining of sorts. Though as I said it seems its looking like a direct sequel to the original trilogy only without the current human set

Shia wants no part of it though he is Steven's kid so it wouldn't surprise me if he comes back. Tyrese has stated he wanted back in. Josh stated recently that nobody has been contacted about the movie. Very early but for now you assume the formula sticks with a reimagining/paint change sequel.

Stephen Spielberg failed me when he did War Horse, so he's no longer a director I look forward to in other films, Robopocalypse might be something I'd reconsider but I'm not too thrilled. But Bay saying he and Spielberg are doing something to reboot the Transformers franchise? Fuck you, Michael Bay.

You know what they should do? Pair James Cameron with Michael Bay. Reason why? Because I know James Cameron can bitch out Bay in order to know how to make a fuckin' movie...a QUALITY movie, not this bullshit where explosions and hot chicks with the story and characters are elements I can easily piss away. Cameron may be overrated with Avatar, but he has great films and experience to make good visual stories, plus I'd love to see Bay get bitched out on the set and seeing him cry himself a river for being unprepared for a lecture of how to MAKE A MOVIE.

The one good thing to come out of this is, and Michael Bay has been doing this consistently since Pearl Harbor, the photographic quality of various visual effects techniques have been advanced largely because of his films. I worked for him, don't like his films, but I can say this about him: no other "tentpole" director in Hollywood has a higher degree of expectation for photographic integrity.

Not Cameron. Not Spielberg. Not Lucas. Not Jackson. None of them are fetishistic about photography like he is. I would expect more of this tendency out of the Scott brothers but, without someone like Doug Trumbull in the mix, they seem to have fairly conventional expectations and standards.

I agree that Bay does like to make a dazzling visual display of his movies, and he's good at doing so, but that's about all there is to it. It's all glorious beautiful gravy with no meat under it. I'd rather see a movie with less than stellar photography but has real depth in the story/acting/etc.

I think a director that covers the bases pretty adequately is Ridley Scott.. His movies are gorgeous, well-written and well acted. I guess, I'm saying that you can have it all in a movie, if you have the right director, and the Transformers franchise, for all of it's visual glory, could've been so much better in a more competent director's hands.

Oh, and my comments towards the Scott bros. were purely where it comes to VFX. They're definitely fetishistic about photography in a general sense, applied to their films, and far better than Bay in this respect. VFX-wise though they haven't done anything that's really in the same category as Bays films though, not lately, in terms of requiring a lot of complex visual effects. We'll see with Prometheus coming up.

Definitely. He's practically anti-photographic integrity. His bar isn't anywhere near "make it look like it was really photographed, on location, actually happening." I'd place him about midway between Peter Jackson (completely synthetic) and Michael Bay (completely photographic). His eye just doesn't swing that way and it's not been a defining property in his decision making. I know this would be counter to conventional perception of his films but it's the truth. His films don't look real and haven't for quite some time and he's okay with that.

Titanic looked pretty real. I must say the space ships in alot of his films look like toys.
