Dirty Carnival is a story about a sergeant level member of a organized crime gang. At 29 he has little to show for his age and worse, has no prospects. While he seemingly has the utmost loyalty from his subordinates he is constantly put down by the under boss. He reluctantly seizes a opportunity which would surely promote him to lieutenant to the big boss. All goes according to plan but he is anything but happy and in a drunken confession he pours his heart out to a filmmaker friend looking for the perfect plot to his movie.
This film was fantastic. Alittle over two hours long, I couldn't stop watching. My attention span isn't that great either. So you know it was an amazing film.
When it comes to organised crime, Byung-Doo is pretty low on the ladder. He is the leader of some local thugs, but his bosses use him for a lot of dirty work and he hardly makes enough money to take care of his mother and pay the rent of their apartment. He almost has to beg for work that pays better but he keeps getting ignored. After trying to move up he finally gets a chance to run a small casino, which gets smashed to bits by a rival gang. If you like raw fighting then this movie delivers with a scene in which a big number of gangsters fight each other with baseball bats. There is a scene where there is fighting in a moving car. They use knives instead of guns to kill other gangsters. I really liked this.
The movie shows the decisions Byung-Doo has to make, which includes a old friendship with a former school friend who wants to make a movie about gangsters and asks him for advice and a bit of a love story with a girl he also knows from school. This is all nicely mixed together to result in a thrilling movie to watch.
What I noticed about Korean cinema is that it takes the standard genre characters and pushes them somewhere else unexpected. I really dig that 8/10 rating
