    RoboCop remake

A remake of RoboCop has been in development for some time, but now it's officially moving forward with Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) directing and Joel Kinnaman (Easy Money, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) starring as the robotic mutha F'er himself. The studio has even locked an August 9th 2013 theatrical release.

Normally I don't care for remakes, but I'm actually kind of excited about this one. Jose Padilha is a great director and can deliver a dark and gritty project, while Joel Kinnaman is a solid actor that I think is perfect for the role. I'm looking forward to seeing what these talents give us in 2013

CGI taints the image of any classic film, Robocop is a classic film with great practical effects and the robots look more realist in stop-motion effects.

I'll keep an open-mind though until I see something.

CGI has actually, finally, surpassed the realism of Go-Motion puppets, though the "straight-ahead" animation technique imposed by puppet animation often yields more organic motions than general-use keyframe techniques (regardless of the realism present in a static image). But that comparison has more to do with the sequel than the original, which I loathe to see re-imagined. What could possibly be gained?

Society (and Detroit in particular) has inched closer and closer to making Verhoven's futuristic satire an everyday reality. This is beyond redundant. And how in the world is anyone gonna top the original Clarence Boddiker, much less our original hero.

I won't mind this remake at all, IF they stay true to the original aspects of what made Robocop so great. It needs to be fucking brutally VIOLENT and it needs that subtle humorous satire that few movies can attain without ending up being a comedy. The original and the first sequel was able to pull it off... I wish the makers of this remake a lot of luck in doing so again. Also it will need a bangup cast like the originals (not counting the third, I thought it sucked). Cast was able to pull it all together and made it a classic.

As far as the special FX are concerned. When done properly and with great care, CG can be amazing and just as visually tangible as anything sitting on the table in front of you. With that being said, I hope they do just that. I hope they put a fuckload of time and attention into making whatever CG they use look good. If they do that, they can load it to the gills with CG and I won't complain.

As it stands, I will wait and reserve judgment until I see some footage... as of right now, it's nothing more than words of the filmmaker's intent: They are doing a remake, this is who is directing it and this is who is starring in it... Not much to condemn or applaud at this point.

Lots of great points made in this thread. The way Verhoeven does the quick cuts to commercials and other little blurbs in the original its sequel as well as Starship Troopers can't be duplicated. Those are a big part of what made all three of those films classics.

If this version is lacking that or done horribly wrong it will ruin the entire experience for me.

Before seeing Dredd in all its violent glory I would have put money on this being PG-13, but now I'm not so sure. I guess we can all hope for an "R" rating. To be honest if its not it will have failed before ever being released.

I absolutely 100% completely agree, Mac... Without an R rating it will not be able to display that gritty violence that made the first so great.. Hopefully, those in charge of such decisions will remember how the one Robocop movie with a PG-13 rating (part 3) was a fucking failure.

im not holding out any hope whatsoever that this will be rated R. Too much franchise potential is ho the suits will see it. But you can get away with a lot more in PG-13 these days so maybe they'll pull it off. It'll be interesting to see how they do the character this time arounc considering things we've seen like Iron Man and that being so successfull. I don't think we'll see the "clunk clunk clunk" turn "clunk clunk clunk" turn style character we know from the past. He'll have a lot of changes im sure. Which I wouldn't have a problem with as long as they don't change him to much.

I bet you were beginning to get psyched for that Robocop remake, huh? What with all the cool actors being lined up for it -- Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Michael Kenneth Williams and Abbie Cornish -- and it being from the director of Elite Squad. Well, according to one respected film journalist who has read the script it's time to lower your expectations.

Latino-Review points out a blistering series of tweets from HitFix's Drew McWeeny who read the script for the reboot, which starts filming this fall for a 2013 release. Here are a few particularly caustic revelations about the script so be advised of SPOILERS:

"In the film, when Murphy is turned into Robocop 1.0, it’s described 'a high-tech version of the ’80s suit.' Then they show a focus group scene where criminals laugh at the design. 'He looks like a toy from the ’80s!' So they redesign him to look 'meaner' as Robocop 2.0, who passes focus group approval. So they not only make sure to include the original design, they also point out it’s dated and stupid. *facepalm*"

"Oh, god… oh dear god… Robocop is a Transformer. He goes from 'social mode' to 'combat mode' and back. Full transformation."

Robocop is dropped into an Al-Qaeda training camp at one point to see what he can do, while the ED-209s are deployed to Iran to stop suicide bombers.

There are a few pretty lousy-sounding winks to lines from the original Paul Verhoeven film (and even to its poster). There are also said to be several different versions of the RoboCop suit used through the film.

if this is true I don' really like the idea of making fun of the original suit. Your just gonna piss off the fans of robocop. I got a feeling this is gonna end up Transformers meets Ironman

Not sure how legit this concept art for the suit is, but it looks fucking terrible.

Obviously concept art isn't final but this Looks like an X-treme (Do the Dew) roller blader. Save this for the inevitable Silver Hawks live action reboot.

The original is one of my all time favorite films. I don't expect much from this remake.

I'd like to think that the filmmakers are smart enough not to use such a silly superhero-lookin' Robocop

I don't know the only reason this film is probably getting made is to ride the current super hero boom and Iron Man's coat tails. Robocop constantly got watered down. There were toys, cartoons and by the 3rd movie ED-209 was hacked by a child to act like a puppy Kid friendly super heros is where it's at. We'll see what happens.

In these times It could be a darkly funny, violent satire about privatized war or it will be a PG-13 story about an action figure going around causing property damage and spouting catchphrases.
